ChatGPT-maker OpenAI has unveiled the long-awaited latest version of its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, GPT-5, saying it can provide PhD-level expertise.<\/p>\n

Billed as \u201csmarter, faster, and more useful,\u201d OpenAI co-founder and chief executive Sam Altman lauded the company\u2019s new model as ushering in a new era of ChatGPT.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think having something like GPT-5 would be pretty much unimaginable at any previous time in human history,\u201d he said ahead of Thursday\u2019s launch.<\/p>\n

GPT-5\u2019s release and claims of its \u201cPhD-level\u201d abilities in areas such as coding and writing come as tech firms continue to compete to have the most advanced AI chatbot.<\/p>\n

Elon Musk recently made similar claims of his own AI chatbot, Grok, which has been plugged into X (formerly Twitter).<\/p>\n

During the launch of Grok\u2019s latest iteration last month, Musk said it was \u201cbetter than PhD level in everything\u201d and called it the world\u2019s \u201csmartest AI\u201d.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Altman said OpenAI\u2019s new model would suffer from fewer hallucinations \u2013 the phenomenon whereby large language models make up answers- and be less deceptive.<\/p>\n

OpenAI is also pitching GPT-5 to coders as a proficient assistant, following a trend among major American AI developers, including Anthropic, whose Claude Code targets the same market.<\/p>\n

What can GPT-5 do?<\/h2>\n

OpenAI has highlighted GPT-5\u2019s ability to create software in its entirety and demonstrate better reasoning capabilities, with answers that show workings, logic and inference.<\/p>\n

The company claims it has been trained to be more honest, provide users with more accurate responses and says that, overall, it feels more human.<\/p>\n

According to Altman, the model is \u201csignificantly better\u201d than its predecessors.<\/p>\n

\u201cGPT-3 sort of felt to me like talking to a high school student\u2026 4 felt like you\u2019re kind of talking to a college student,\u201d he said in a briefing ahead of Thursday\u2019s launch.<\/p>\n

\u201cGPT-5 is the first time that it really feels like talking to an expert in any topic, like a PhD-level expert.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Prof Carissa V\u00e9liz of the Institute for Ethics in AI, however, GPT-5\u2019s launch may not be as significant as its marketing may suggest.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese systems, as impressive as they are, haven\u2019t been able to be really profitable,\u201d she said, also noting that they can only mimic \u2013 rather than truly emulate \u2013 human reasoning abilities.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a fear that we need to keep up the hype, or else the bubble might burst, and so it might be that it\u2019s mostly marketing.\u201d<\/p>\n

One ethics expert said the launch of GPT-5 reinforced the growing gap between AI\u2019s capabilities and our ability to govern it in the way the public expects.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs these models become more capable, the need for comprehensive regulation becomes even more urgent,\u201d said Gaia Marcus, Director of the Ada Lovelace Institute.<\/p>\n

The BBC\u2019s AI Correspondent Marc Cieslak gained exclusive access to GPT-5 before its official launch.<\/p>\n

\u201cApart from minor cosmetic differences, the experience was similar to using the older chatbot: give it tasks or ask it questions by typing a text prompt.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s now powered by what\u2019s called a reasoning model, which essentially means it thinks harder about solving problems, but this seems more like an evolution than a revolution for the tech.\u201d<\/p>\n

GPT-5\u2019s rollout also has implications for commercial enterprises concerned about the use of their content.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs AI content becomes more convincing, we need to ask ourselves \u2013 are we protecting the people and creativity behind what we see every day?\u201d, said Grant Farhall, chief product officer at Getty Images. \u201cAuthenticity matters \u2013 but it doesn\u2019t come for free.\u201d<\/p>\n

Farhall said it was important to scrutinise exactly how AI models are being trained and ensure that creators are being compensated if their work is being used.<\/p>\n

The company will roll out the model to all users from Thursday.<\/p>\n

In the coming days, it will become a lot clearer whether it really is as good as Sam Altman claims it is.<\/p>\n

Clash with other AI firms<\/h2>\n

Anthropic recently revoked OpenAI\u2019s access to its application programming interface(API),\u00a0claiming<\/strong>\u00a0the company was violating its terms of service by using its coding tools ahead of GPT-5\u2019s launch.<\/p>\n

An OpenAI spokesperson said it was \u201cindustry standard\u201d to evaluate other AI systems to assess their own progress and safety.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile we respect Anthropic\u2019s decision to cut off our API access, it\u2019s disappointing considering our API remains available to them,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n

With a free tier for its new model, the company may be signalling a potential move away from the proprietary models that have previously dominated its offerings.<\/p>\n

ChatGPT changes<\/h2>\n

On Monday, OpenAI revealed it was making changes to promote a healthier relationship between users and ChatGPT.<\/p>\n

In a\u00a0blog post, it said: \u201cAI can feel more responsive and personal than prior technologies, especially for vulnerable individuals experiencing mental or emotional distress.\u201d<\/p>\n

It said it would not give a definitive answer to questions such as, \u201cShould I break up with my boyfriend?\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, it would \u201chelp you think it through \u2013 asking questions, weighing pros and cons\u201d, according to the blog post.<\/p>\n

In May, OpenAI pulled a\u00a0heavily-criticised update\u00a0which made ChatGPT \u201coverly flattering\u201d, according to Sam Altman.<\/p>\n

On a\u00a0recent episode\u00a0of OpenAI\u2019s own podcast, Mr Altman said he was thinking about how people interact with his products.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not all going to be good, there will still be problems,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople will develop these somewhat problematic, or maybe very problematic, parasocial relationships [with AI]. Society will have to figure out new guardrails. But the upsides will be tremendous.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Altman is known to be a fan of the 2013 film Her, where a man develops a relationship with an AI companion.<\/p>\n

In 2024, actress Scarlett Johansson, who voiced the AI companion in the film,\u00a0said she was left \u201cshocked\u201d and \u201cangered\u201d\u00a0after OpenAI launched a chatbot with an \u201ceerily similar\u201d voice to her own.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
