Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, the Director of Electoral Services at the Electoral Commission (EC), has said that Ghana\u2019s Electoral Commission has one of the best Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) in the world for electoral purposes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Dr. Quaicoe, the BVDs are robust at detecting voter identity and preventing voter fraud during elections.<\/p>\n

Despite the challenges that marred the start of the limited voter registration exercise, Dr. Serebour maintained that the Commission is committed to producing a credible voter register for the 2024 elections.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Keminni Amanor on Hot Issues on Sunday, May 19, the Director of Electoral Services said, \u201cThe EC has one of the best BVDs in the world in terms of speed and accuracy in determining voter identity. Posterity will judge us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

\u201cAnybody who has followed our elections will know that the technical challenges happened in 2020 when we decided to go for the new biometric verification devices. But it turned out to be a successful election,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Moreover, he emphasised that the Commission\u2019s directive to its officers to switch to an offline mode of registration was part of the process agreed upon with the political parties.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cGoing offline is part of the voter registration process, so it\u2019s not something new. We did more offline registrations in 2020 than in 2024,\u201d he told Keminni Amanor.<\/p>\n

He further revealed that as of the end of Day 6 of the registration exercise, about 2,900 challenges have been raised against certain applicants across the country, which are being resolved.<\/p>\n

EC to register over 620,000 first-time voters<\/strong><\/h6>\n

Meanwhile, the Commission is seeking to register about 623,000 first-time voters onto the electoral roll in the ongoing limited voter registration exercise across the country ahead of the December 7 national elections.<\/p>\n

The 21-day exercise commenced Tuesday, May 7, in all 258 district offices of the Commission. The exercise is expected to end on Monday, May 27, 2024.<\/p>\n

Moreover, the Commission has set up additional 785 centres to cater for individuals who may have difficulty accessing the EC\u2019s district offices.<\/p>\n

\u201cPermanent centres will be set up at the District offices while mobile teams would be used to register eligible applicants in the difficult-to-access Electoral Areas. The list of registration centres will be provided to the Political Parties no later than twenty-one (21) days to the Registration exercise,\u201d the EC noted.<\/p>\n
