Euro 2024 hosts\u00a0Germany\u00a0named a largely expected preliminary squad on Thursday, with\u00a0Mats Hummels\u00a0and\u00a0Leon Goretzka\u00a0the only notable absentees.<\/p>\n

Manager Julian Nagelsmann four goalkeepers in his squad, with\u00a0VfB Stuttgart\u2019s\u00a0Alexander N\u00fcbel\u00a0joining\u00a0Manuel Neuer,\u00a0Oliver Baumann\u00a0and\u00a0Marc-Andr\u00e9 ter Stegen\u00a0as Nagelsmann otherwise largely showed faith in the players he has used over the past seven months.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you have this structure, which is still growing but fragile after our performances in March, bringing in new elements could trigger an implosion of that structure and you would have to start from scratch,\u201d Nagelsmann said ahead of his first international tournament.<\/p>\n

Three-time European champions\u00a0Germany, who have not won a major trophy since the 2014 World Cup, beat\u00a0France\u00a0and\u00a0Netherlands\u00a0in back-to-back friendlies in March, their best results for some time.<\/p>\n

Nagelsmann said having four goalkeepers was crucial for spreading the workload during the tournament.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have nominated four goalkeepers and we will go with four to the tournament. N\u00fcbel has deserved the nomination,\u201d Nagelsmann said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy four keepers? You can have goalkeepers in training as well and Manuel [Neuer] does not always have to do it. We can control training and spread the load.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat means 22 infield players. I can live with that very well. We can still do proper training with at least 20 infield players if some are missing.\u201d<\/p>\n

In veterans\u00a0Thomas M\u00fcller,\u00a0Toni Kroos\u00a0and Neuer, there are three 2014 world champions in the 27-man squad which must be cut to 26 before the tournament.<\/p>\n

Aleksandar Pavlovic, 20, who missed the March friendlies through injury and is still waiting for his first cap, earned a place following his superb form for Bayern.<\/p>\n

Robert Andrich,\u00a0Florian Wirtz\u00a0and\u00a0Jonathan Tah\u00a0are the\u00a0Bayer Leverkusen\u00a0players in the squad having helped the\u00a0Bundesliga\u00a0champions remain unbeaten across all competitions so far this season.<\/p>\n

Germany kick off their Group A campaign in the tournament opener against\u00a0Scotland\u00a0on June 14. They also play\u00a0Hungary\u00a0and\u00a0Switzerland\u00a0in the first stage.<\/p>
