Ukraine\u2019s Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of violating the \u201cenergy ceasefire\u201d that United States President Donald Trump unilaterally announced at the weekend and promised to respond if the attacks continue.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the Warsaw Security Forum via videolink on Monday, the Ukrainian president urged the US to step in to ensure \u2060that Moscow abided by the truce, noting that there have already been \u201cRussian violations of the energy ceasefire announced by \u200cPresident Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are waiting for the details of the conditions between the Americans and Russians, \u2060and we are waiting \u2060to see what specific steps the Americans are ready to take,\u201d said Zelenskyy, who expressed surprise at the ceasefire deal.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis \u2060energy ceasefire, it can work, and it can become a major step toward ending \u200cthe war if the Americans truly step in now and make \u200csure \u200cRussians respect it \u2026 If Russia does not agree to an energy ceasefire, we will respond,\u201d Zelenskyy told the Warsaw Security Forum.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s announcement on Sunday that the two countries had agreed to an \u201cenergy ceasefire\u201d caused confusion. It came two days after Trump declared a temporary easing of US sanctions on Russian diesel, prompting outrage from European allies and Kyiv, who said it would only embolden Russian President Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n

Both Ukraine and Russia have been launching mutual attacks on each other\u2019s energy infrastructure for months, adding to upward pressure on global energy prices that have risen amid the US-Israeli war on Iran.<\/p>\n

Zelenskyy initially denied any knowledge of the agreement<\/a> and said it was \u201cnews to him,\u201d according to Axios.<\/p>\n

Trump has previously taken to his Truth Social account to announce truces or other arrangements before either Kyiv or Moscow confirmed them.<\/p>\n

\u201cAn energy ceasefire and other steps to reduce escalation and guarantee security are truly needed here in reality, not just on Truth Social,\u201d\u00a0 Zelenskyy added.<\/p>\n

European leaders expressed encouragement at the proposed ceasefire, but agreed with Zelenskyy that it had not taken effect.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have not noted, over\u200c the last 48 hours, any energy ceasefire coming from the \u200cRussian \u200cside,\u201d French President Emmanuel Macron told reporters at a Paris autoshow.<\/p>\n

At the Warsaw Security Forum, \u2060Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that \u201cRussia is not interested in \u200ca ceasefire, de-escalation, or peace \u2026 that is why I will go to Brussels to urge all European partners \u2060to consider increasing \u2060sanctions.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Brussels, the European Union announced that it has officially added almost 1,600 new sanctions on Russia\u2019s military industrial complex, including individuals and entities involved in its four-and-a-half-year war<\/a>, in a bid to maintain pressure on Moscow.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the single largest expansion of our sanctions list since Russia started its war,\u201d EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas wrote online. \u201cEurope is again showing a united front \u2026 We are making it significantly harder, slower and more expensive for Russia to produce the weapons it uses to kill Ukrainians,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Russia \u2060attacked Ukrainian gas production facilities belonging to its state \u2060oil and gas \u2060company Naftogaz in the Kharkiv region overnight, which caused a fire, the \u200ccompany said on Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe attack damaged critical equipment. Our employees are doing everything possible \u2060to repair the \u2060damage as quickly as possible and \u2060prevent risks to \u2060the stable \u2060operation of the energy system,\u201d Naftogaz acting CEO \u200cSergii Fedorenko wrote on Telegram.<\/p>\n

A day earlier, Zelenskyy had said that Ukraine was ready to halt attacks on Russian oil refineries if Moscow ceased its own attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
