In markets across Ghana, plantain sellers are rethinking their survival strategies amid wild price swings.<\/p>\n

As shifting supply cycles create scarcity in some areas and gluts in others, vendors are expanding their offerings to include yams, maize, and cocoyam. Their goal: to retain loyal customers, stabilise earnings, and avoid tying up scarce capital in overpriced plantain stock.<\/p>\n

Food vendor Justina Lamptey, who usually fries plantain for sale, has recently switched her focus.<\/p>\n

\u201cLately, there\u2019s no plantain, so I\u2019ve switched to yam and cocoyam,\u201d she explains. \u201cPlantain has its season\u2014when it\u2019s out, prices go up, sometimes to GH\u00a220 for just three. At that rate, I can\u2019t make a profit.\u201d<\/p>\n

She plans to reintroduce plantain to her menu as soon as prices ease.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy profit is higher on plantain than on yam or cocoyam, so I\u2019ll add plantain the moment it\u2019s in season.\u201d
Roaster Beatrice Amarh has adopted a rotating menu to manage such risks.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause plantain is not in season, I only roast yam and maize. There is some plantain in the market, but it\u2019s very expensive and I\u2019d lose profit if I bought it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Years of trading have taught her to follow the crop calendar closely.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen plantain is in season, maize goes out. When maize is in season, plantain goes out. So I switch depending on what\u2019s available.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Kokomlemle, veteran trader Maa Gifty keeps a small, strategic stock of plantain on hand\u2014even during peak price periods\u2014to maintain her higher-spending clientele.
\u201cEvery year, plantain gets expensive when it\u2019s out of stock. But this year, it\u2019s very expensive,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

A bunch can cost her GH\u00a240, which she retails at GH\u00a250, leaving a slim GH\u00a210 margin before factoring in transport, fuel, and spoilage.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany traders drop plantain entirely during these times, but I keep a little. It\u2019s the rich people who often buy. One person can take the whole heap\u2014I can get GH\u00a2300 or GH\u00a2200 just like that. Some come from the Industrial Area just to buy from me.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also gauges customer perceptions carefully.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople feel more satisfied when they buy maize or corn instead of plantain,\u201d she notes.<\/p>\n

As a result, her stall balances smaller quantities of premium plantain for big spenders with more affordable staples like yam, maize, and cocoyam for general traffic.<\/p>\n

For consumers like Thomas Asare, the price pressure is clearly visible.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou go to the market to buy plantain\u2014it\u2019s very expensive. The plantain-and-beans they sell, one is now GH\u00a22 instead of GH\u00a21 or 50 pesewas,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

For low-income households trying to stretch weekly food budgets, that price jump is significant.<\/p>\n

So the next time you visit your favourite plantain seller, don\u2019t be surprised if you leave with less, or none at all.<\/p>\n

From yams to maize and cocoyam, Ghana\u2019s market traders are diversifying their stock to keep their businesses afloat, and to keep dinner on your table.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
