{"id":7280,"date":"2026-10-07T00:54:03","date_gmt":"2026-10-07T00:54:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sotnews.agency\/?p=7280"},"modified":"2026-10-07T00:54:03","modified_gmt":"2026-10-07T00:54:03","slug":"yemeni-forces-launch-offensive-to-retake-houthi-held-al-waziiya-in-taiz-houthis-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sotnews.agency\/?p=7280","title":{"rendered":"Yemeni forces launch offensive to retake Houthi-held al-Waziiya in Taiz | Houthis News"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class='booster-block booster-read-block'>\n                <div class=\"twp-read-time\">\n                \t<i class=\"booster-icon twp-clock\"><\/i> <span>Read Time:<\/span>2 Minute, 44 Second                <\/div>\n\n            <\/div><p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p class=\"article__subhead\"><em>The mountainous district is key to control of Mocha, the Red Sea port the Houthis seized last month.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p>Forces aligned with Yemen\u2019s internationally recognised government have launched an operation to capture a strategic mountainous district from the Houthis as part of a wider push to retake the Red Sea coast and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.<\/p>\n<p>The offensive on the district of al-Waziiya in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/10\/4\/why-is-fighting-intensifying-in-yemens-taiz-governorate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Taiz<\/a> governorate on Tuesday came as Saudi Arabia, which backs Yemen\u2019s government, intercepted a Houthi ballistic missile targeting the city of Khamis Mushait.<\/p>\n<section class=\"more-on\">\n<h2 class=\"more-on__heading\">Recommended Stories<!-- --> <\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">list of 3 items<\/span><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p>The operation is part of the \u201cDawn of Yemen\u201d offensive that was announced on Sunday by Rashad al-Alimi, chairman of Yemen\u2019s Presidential Leadership Council, to retake all remaining Houthi-held territory, including the capital, Sanaa, which the Iran-backed group has controlled since 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The media centre of Yemen\u2019s army said in a post on X that the Homeland Shield Forces, a pro-government military faction, have begun \u201ca large-scale operation\u201d to retake al-Waziiya.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe armed forces have secured strategic hills overlooking the al-Mansoura area, amidst a mass retreat by the Houthi militia,\u201d it said, citing a military source.<\/p>\n<p>The Houthis, however, denied the claim, saying they had successfully repelled the Yemeni government advance in al-Waziiya.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"\" aria-label=\"Locator map\" id=\"datawrapper-chart-FX1Bw\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/FX1Bw\/3\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"width:0;min-width:100% !important;border:none\" height=\"510\" data-external=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The mountainous district is located west of Taiz, east of the Red Sea port of Mocha. The Houthis had seized Mocha and areas around the Bab al-Mandeb Strait \u2013 a strategic maritime corridor \u2013 in a lightning offensive last month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are the mountains that the Houthis took control of prior to the takeover of the city of Mocha,\u201d Al Jazeera\u2019s Yousef Mawry said, reporting from Sanaa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the Yemeni government is serious about taking over the city of Mocha, they cannot do so unless they take over the region in the district of al-Waziiya,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"saudi-interception\">Saudi interception<\/h2>\n<p>The fighting came as the Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen said it intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by the Houthis towards the southwestern city of Khamis Mushait.<\/p>\n<p>Major-General Turki al-Maliki, the spokesperson for the coalition, said the Houthi missile threats originated from Houthi-held Sanaa and the governorates of Saada and Amran.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe coalition continues to neutralise the threat posed by ballistic and surface-to-surface missiles and to destroy their launch sources,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier on Tuesday, Saudi Arabia\u2019s General Authority of Civil Aviation said in a statement that King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz airport in Jazan and Najran airport, near the Yemen border, were hit in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/10\/6\/saudi-arabia-says-three-wounded-in-attacks-on-airports-near-yemen-border\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">attacks<\/a> that wounded three people.<\/p>\n<p>The attacks caused injuries of \u201cvarying severity\u201d and material damage, and the injured have been taken to hospital, the authority said.<\/p>\n<p>The Houthis said late on Monday that their forces targeted sites across southern Saudi Arabia, including airports and military sites.<\/p>\n<p>The Saudi-led coalition, meanwhile, has confirmed its participation in the Yemeni government offensive to retake all Houthi-held territory, saying 100 of its fighter jets are providing air support.<\/p>\n<p>Pakistan and Turkiye have also agreed to activate \u201cdeterrence measures\u201d under their mutual defence pact with Saudi Arabia and rapidly deploy forces to the Gulf kingdom to counter attacks by the Houthis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a
