Israel has reacted with anger after the United Kingdom\u2019s Green Party voted to define Zionism as a form of racism.<\/p>\n

Israel, as well as British Jewish groups, lashed out on Sunday following the vote by the small political party. The Israeli government declared that it now views the left-leaning Greens as giving \u201clegitimacy to terrorism\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Green Party, which received 6 percent of the vote in the UK\u2019s national elections in 2024, said \u2060it regarded Zionism as \u201can ethnonationalist political project\u201d and repeated its call for Britain\u2019s Labour government to end all arms trade with Israel.<\/p>\n

In a swift response, Israel\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the policy went \u201cfar beyond the boundaries of legitimate political debate\u201d and called on other British political parties to condemn the resolution.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Greens have adopted not only the green of Hamas, but also its ideology: the elimination of the State of Israel through armed struggle,\u201d the ministry wrote on social media.<\/p>\n

Israeli President Isaac Herzog labelled the move \u201ca disgrace and a shame\u201d. Writing on social media, he said: \u201cThose who claim the antisemitic lie that \u2018Zionism is racism\u2019 deliberately endanger Jews and Israelis everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid said it is \u201cnot Zionism that\u2019s racism, it is the Green Party\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Movement for Progressive Judaism, a British group, said: \u201cThe Green Party has made \u2060antisemitism party policy and become a racist party\u201d.<\/p>\n

It added that the support of some Jews for the motion did not mean it would not be used to discriminate against others.<\/p>\n

During the vote, the Green Party also reaffirmed its \u201ccommitment to Palestinian liberation, the right of return, Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS), and a full arms embargo against Israel\u201d.<\/p>\n

It also reiterated support for \u201cthe establishment of a single democratic state throughout historic Palestine\u201d, the party said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The motion was backed by a majority of 1,022 to 813. Party leader Zack Polanski<\/a>, who is running<\/a> for Parliament in former Prime Minister Keir Starmer\u2019s London constituency, did not vote.<\/p>\n

In an interview with UK media outlet Sky News, the Greens\u2019 co-deputy leader Mothin Ali said that the heavy casualty toll during Israel\u2019s genocidal war on Gaza and its ongoing attacks were the context for the vote.<\/p>\n

The Green Party has five sitting members in the UK\u2019s 650-seat parliament.<\/p>\n

Following the passage of the resolution, Polanski and other Green Party members said in a joint statement they would \u201ccontinue to stand in opposition to genocide, ethnic cleansing, apartheid and the illegal occupation\u201d and \u201ccall out the heinous crimes of the Netanyahu government\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
