Victor Wembanyama\u00a0came into the NBA with massive expectations, and he responded with one of the best rookie campaigns the league has ever seen.<\/p>\n

Wembanyama was named the NBA\u2019s Rookie of the Year on Monday, garnering all 99 first-place votes.\u00a0Oklahoma City Thunder\u00a0center\u00a0Chet Holmgren, the No. 2 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, came in second with 98 second-place votes. Last season\u2019s No. 2 pick, Charlotte\u2019s\u00a0Brandon Miller, came in third.<\/p>\n

Wembanyama becomes the sixth unanimous Rookie of the Year in the last 40 years joining Ralph Sampson (1984), David Robinson (1990), Blake Griffin (2011),\u00a0Damian Lillard\u00a0(2013) and\u00a0Karl-Anthony Towns\u00a0(2016). He also joins the Spurs\u2019 other two No. 1 picks \u2014 Robinson and Tim Duncan (1998) \u2014 as winners of the award.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy goals were always to help my team as best as I could and get better as the year went on,\u201d Wembanyama said from San Antonio on TNT after the award was announced on the network\u2019s NBA playoff pregame show. \u201cI knew in order to do this I had to be individually good on the court and dominant. So, it was a huge thing for me and a big thing to get. It\u2019s always been really important and I\u2019m glad it\u2019s finally official.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 71 games this season, Wembanyama averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 3.6 blocks and 1.2 steals per game. The last player to average 20 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocks in a single season was Shaquille O\u2019Neal, who did it in his MVP season in 1999-2000.<\/p>\n

Wembanyama became only the second rookie in NBA history to lead the league in blocks (since blocks were officially recorded as a stat in 1973-74) joining Manute Bol, who accomplished the feat in 1985-86. Wembanyama is the first rookie to record 250 blocks in a season since Alonzo Mourning and O\u2019Neal did it in 1992-93. The 4.5 blocks per game Wembanyama averaged after the All-Star break were the most by any player after the break since\u00a0Dikembe Mutombo\u00a0in 1994.<\/p>\n

Wembanyama is one of three finalists for Defensive Player of the Year along with Minnesota\u2019s\u00a0Rudy Gobert\u00a0and Miami\u2019s\u00a0Bam Adebayo. Because of the positionless nature of the All-Defensive team, Wembanyama could end up being the first rookie ever to make first team All-Defense later this week.<\/p>\n

Despite all of Wembanyama\u2019s accomplishments, San Antonio still finished with the same record as they did a season ago \u2014 22-60 \u2014 and it took seven wins in their final 11 games to get there.<\/p>\n

The Spurs remain a young team, and while no one thought their record wouldn\u2019t improve, Wembanyama does see the long-term vision.<\/p>
