Accra, June 2, GNA \u2013 Speaker of Parliament\u00a0Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has appealed to Members of Parliament\u00a0(MPs) to reconsider the passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025,\u00a0popularly called Anit LGBTQ\u00a0\u00a0Bill,\u00a0to ensure\u00a0that\u00a0it reflects bipartisan consensus, unity, integrity, and respect for all Ghanaians.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Delivering a formal communication on the floor of the House on Tuesday, the Speaker noted that the passage of the bill, popularly known as the anti-LGBTQ bill, on Friday, May 29, 2026, did not comply with the procedural requirements outlined in Standing Orders 170, 171, and 172.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The passage of the bill has sparked public outcry, with the Minority Caucus insisting that their concerns were not\u00a0captured,\u00a0and\u00a0accused the Majority\u00a0side\u00a0of using its numerical strength to push the law through.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Speaker\u00a0Bagbin stressed that the bill touched\u00a0deeply on the moral convictions, cultural values, constitutional principles, and social aspirations of the nation, hence its widespread public attention.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI respectfully appeal to\u00a0Honourable\u00a0Members to reflect carefully upon the issues raised and to consider in the larger national interest the bipartisan character of the bill, the unity of the House and the nation, and the need to maintain the highest standards of procedural integrity to revisit its decision on the third reading of the bill to permit a reconsideration of the final text of the bill and any amendments thereto,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

He clarified that such a course would not amount to abandoning the bill or rejecting its objectives, but rather reaffirm Parliament\u2019s commitment to due process, fidelity to the Constitution, consensus building, transparency, and legislative certainty.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will ensure that any final decision taken by the House reflects not only the will of Parliament, but also the fullest support of Ghanaians in the law that is ultimately enacted,\u201d Mr Bagbin emphasised.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Speaker expressed confidence that Members of Parliament would approach the matter with wisdom, patriotism, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to the integrity of Ghana\u2019s parliamentary democracy and the dignity of the House.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
