Pakistan\u2019s prime minister has condemned Houthi attacks<\/a> on Saudi Arabia, warning that any \u201cthreat to the sanctity\u201d of the Muslim holy cities of Mecca and Medina is a \u201cred line that must never be crossed\u201d.<\/p>\n

Addressing the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Friday, Shehbaz Sharif denounced recent Houthi attacks as \u201cdeplorable\u201d.<\/p>\n

He added that an attack by the Iran-aligned Yemeni group, which Riyadh says targeted Mecca, \u201coutraged Muslims across the globe\u201d. The Houthis have dismissed the accusations as a \u201cheinous lie\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Last month, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye signed a trilateral defence pact<\/a>, formally known as the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement. The pact states that an attack on any member will be treated as an attack on all. However, Islamabad and Ankara have refrained from getting involved in Riyadh\u2019s ongoing fight with the Houthis.<\/p>\n

The \u2060military \u2060chiefs of all three countries met in Riyadh on Friday and \u2060discussed enhancing intelligence sharing and military \u2060coordination, \u200cthe Pakistani military said. The chiefs reviewed the security situation and \u2060threats facing Saudi Arabia, \u2060affirmed a commitment to collective defence and \u2060pledged to turn \u2060Mecca Agreement commitments into effective cooperation, the \u200carmy added.<\/p>\n

It is not clear what, if any, support Ankara and Islamabad may provide to Riyadh. In a written interview published by the US media outlet Newsweek on Friday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said support could include \u201cintelligence, logistics or ammunition, with more extensive military assistance possible depending on the scale of the threat\u201d.<\/p>\n

Iran and Palestine<\/h2>\n

In Sharif\u2019s UN address, he also referenced the US-Israeli war that was launched against Iran in late February, as well as Islamabad\u2019s role as a co-mediator.<\/p>\n

Pakistan\u2019s efforts culminated in the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding<\/a>, signed by Washington and Tehran, which was intended to help end the conflict.<\/p>\n

The accord has since unravelled while regional countries push for a conclusive end to the war, which has caused a global energy crisis and exacerbated tensions across the Middle East.<\/p>\n

\u201cYet amid the roar of missiles, drones and guns, the voice for diplomacy must echo even louder and stronger,\u201d Sharif said.<\/p>\n

He added that the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has effectively blockaded, and the Bab al-Mandeb waterway, which is now largely under Houthi control, are \u201carteries of the global economy\u201d that should remain free and safe.<\/p>\n

The Pakistani prime minister also denounced what he described as Israel\u2019s \u201cgenocidal agenda\u201d in Palestine, while condemning \u201cIsraeli aggression against Lebanon and Syria\u201d. These were sentiments echoed earlier in the day by Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam<\/a> in his UN General Assembly address.<\/p>\n

India, Kashmir, Afghanistan<\/h2>\n

Closer to home, Sharif\u2019s speech touched on tensions with Pakistan\u2019s neighbours.<\/p>\n

Criticising India, he accused New Delhi of weaponising the Indus waters, which both countries have jointly managed for more than six decades. The two neighbours heavily rely on the Himalayan river network.<\/p>\n

Sharif warned that \u201cany attempt to stop, impede or divert Pakistan\u2019s share of the waters will be treated as an act of war\u201d.<\/p>\n

He also called for what he described as a \u201cjust and fair solution\u201d to the Kashmir dispute, which both Pakistan and India claim in its entirety. Sharif alleged that there have been attempts to \u201calter the legal status\u201d of Kashmir through demographic engineering.<\/p>\n

Another pressing issue for Islamabad is the threat posed by the Tehrik-e-Taliban (TTP), or Pakistani Taliban. Sharif said groups operate from \u201csanctuaries inside Afghanistan, with the aim of destabilising Pakistan\u201d, insisting that attacks launched from Afghanistan \u201cmust come to a grinding halt\u201d.<\/p>\n

This comes as the latest cross-border fighting left several Afghan Taliban fighters dead<\/a> on Friday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
