The Managing Director of Societe Generale, Hakim Ouzzani, has stressed the negative impact of women\u2019s\u00a0exclusion from essential financial services on the\u00a0growth of the economy\u00a0in the country.<\/p>\n

This\u00a0comes on the back of the\u00a0launch of the\u00a0Societe Generale\u00a0Women\u2019s\u00a0Club\u00a0on Thursday, April 25, 2024.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0programme\u2019s\u00a0goal is\u00a0to provide more entrepreneurial opportunities for women to promote\u00a0women\u2019s\u00a0equality in the country.<\/p>\n

During his address, Mr Ouzzani\u00a0that\u00a0measures are being put in place to increase\u00a0women\u2019s\u00a0inclusion in businesses, such as investing in women entrepreneurs to bridge the financial exclusion gap, which is crucial for the\u00a0industry\u2019s\u00a0growth.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cA<\/span>s a society, women represent not just half of the population\u00a0<\/span>but<\/span>\u00a0they form the cornerstone of our families, communities and economy. However, despite their invaluable contributions, a stark reality persists \u2013 many women\u00a0<\/span>are excluded<\/span>\u00a0from accessing essential financial services. This exclusion not only stifles individual potential but hampers the growth and prosperity of our nation\u00a0<\/span>as a whole<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cT<\/span>he 2021 Mastercard Index of Women Entrepreneurs (MIWE) ranked Ghana third behind <\/span>Swazi and Uganda as the countries with the most women business owners globally as a percentage of total business owners. In the same 2021 report, Nigeria, Angola and Ghana are ranked joint first globally in <\/span>Women\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0Entrepreneurial Activity Rate. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDespite their agency and industriousness, the financial facilities available do not cater to the unique needs of women and <\/span>in<\/span>\u00a0many\u00a0<\/span>cases<\/span>\u00a0may even be detrimental to their growth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>This is where Societe Generale Ghana steps in. <\/span>Having operated in Ghana for several decades now, we are attuned to the needs of\u00a0<\/span>not only our female customers but also<\/span>\u00a0the working female populace as a whole.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>This<\/span>\u00a0covers the corporate woman engaged in a secondary stream of income, the Entrepreneur woman dedicated to forging a path in the business world, the young woman innovator looking to provide new solutions to problems in our society\u00a0<\/span>et<\/span>c<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Osei Gyasi, the head of banking supervision at the Bank of Ghana, commended Societe Generale for its continuous support for women in the financial sector. He encouraged the institution to leverage sustainability efforts to attract green funds to support its lending activities for women.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cW<\/span>hile applauding SG, I would like to encourage the bank to explore the possibility of developing other products which serve other vulnerable\u00a0<\/span>segments of the market<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>It is worthy of note that<\/span>\u00a0beyond the SG Woman product\u00a0<\/span>being launched<\/span>\u00a0today, SG continues to embark on other initiatives\u00a0<\/span>which<\/span>\u00a0reinforce their commitment to being a sustainable bank\u00a0<\/span>including<\/span>\u00a0organising women-focused clinics<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>embarking on financial literacy programs for tertiary institutions and\u00a0<\/span>other<\/span>\u00a0market segments.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>would like to<\/span> encourage SG to leverage their sustainability efforts to attract green funds to support their lending activities. For example, the Green Climate Fund (GCF) has allocated <\/span>$1.26 billion for climate action in developing countries <\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0I would like to encourage SG to get accredited by the C F to take advantage of\u00a0<\/span>the funding opportunities it offers<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My understanding is that the Ministry of Finance has set up a whole division to focus on climate and is ready to assist financial institutions in\u00a0<\/span>this regard to access<\/span>\u00a0this global fund<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Finally, The Board Chair for Societe Generale, Margaret\u00a0<\/span>Boateng<\/span>\u00a0called on individuals and stakeholders to invite more young women to the club to empower them to\u00a0<\/span>financial<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>prosperity<\/span><\/p>\n
