German side VfL \u200cWolfsburg and midfielder Christian Eriksen have agreed to \u2060terminate the \u2060Danish international\u2019s contract by mutual consent, the second-tier Bundesliga football club said.<\/p>\n

The decision announced on Wednesday brought an early end \u2060to Eriksen\u2019s contract, which was set to run until June 2027.<\/p>\n

The 34-year-old playmaker collapsed during a friendly<\/a> against Ukraine \u2060in June.<\/p>\n

Eriksen previously suffered a cardiac arrest<\/a> during Denmark\u2019s opening European Championship group match against Finland in Copenhagen in 2021. He was out for six months after that collapse and has played the remainder of his career with a pacemaker fitted.<\/p>\n

In July, Eriksen said he would return to his native Denmark to \u200cundergo a rehabilitation programme.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark. I\u2019m pleased that we were able to find a solution together,\u201d Eriksen said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy time in Wolfsburg was marked by many highs and lows. I know that \u2060the club is now in good \u2060hands as it aims to make its way back to the Bundesliga, and I am convinced that a successful future lies ahead for VfL.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eriksen joined Wolfsburg \u2060as a free agent a year ago, making 34 appearances across all competitions and \u2060scoring three goals along with providing \u206010 assists.<\/p>\n

Wolfsburg Managing Director of Sport Dieter Hecking said the club granted Eriksen\u2019s request to cancel the agreement.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has already experienced and achieved a great deal during \u200chis extraordinary career,\u201d Hecking said. \u201cDespite his short time here, he has left a lasting impression on his teammates, our staff \u200cand \u200cthe fans.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eriksen also played for Ajax Amsterdam, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan and Manchester United.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
