France<\/a> will summon Iran\u2019s ambassador and take \u201cappropriate measures\u201d after Iranian authorities closed a French-language centre linked to its embassy in Tehran, according to the French Foreign Ministry.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis new attack against France\u2019s cultural presence in Iran<\/a>, following the assault on two staff members of the French embassy last July, is unjustifiable and unacceptable,\u201d Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pascal Confavreux said in a statement on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Iran announced on Sunday the closure of the centre it accused of conducting \u201cillegal acts that violated diplomatic conventions\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cBased on the Tehran prosecutor\u2019s office, the illegal centre affiliated with the French embassy in Tehran, which has operated for years under the guise of language instruction, was closed,\u201d the Iranian judiciary\u2019s Mizan news website said, referring to the French Language Centre (CLF).<\/p>\n

It said the centre \u201cabused its status as a language training facility\u201d and sought to \u201cidentify and build networks among the country\u2019s elite figures while facilitating their departure\u201d.<\/p>\n

The French Foreign Ministry said it would \u201ctake appropriate measures to respond\u201d and would summon Iran\u2019s ambassador in Paris at the request of French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot.<\/p>\n

Relations between Tehran and Paris have been strained<\/a> in recent months.<\/p>\n

In August, Iran\u2019s Intelligence Ministry said it detained two French diplomats over alleged foreign interference during a national security investigation before handing them over to the French ambassador.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
