Israel<\/a>\u00a0has retaliated against\u00a0Iran<\/a>\u00a0with reports of\u00a0explosions<\/a>\u00a0heard and airspace closed around the city of Isfahan.<\/p>\n

Horrifying photos show the plumes of smoke rising into the air following the strike as the targeted facilities erupt into flames.<\/p>\n

Isfahan is home to a major airbase for Iran\u2019s military and is associated with the country\u2019s nuclear program, which was not believed to be the target of the attack.<\/p>\n

Iranian state-sanctioned media revealed that no major damage from the alleged attacks occurred as they said that no important facilities near the city were \u201cdamaged significantly.\u201d <\/p>\n

It was later determined that the loud blast heard near Isfahan was Iranian battery defence systems firing at a \u201csuspicious object,\u201d the Tasnim news agency reported that a top commander said.<\/p>\n

State media confirmed that\u00a0the country\u2019s air defence batteries were activated<\/a>\u00a0and fired on early Friday morning in several provinces, but did not elaborate on which ones or what specifically caused the batteries to\u00a0fire<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 while it remains unconfirmed what the cause of the explosions was.<\/p>\n

Taking to X, formerly known as\u00a0Twitter<\/a>, Hossein Dalirian, a spokesperson for Iran\u2019s civilian space program, added that several small \u201cquadcopter\u201d drones had been shot down.<\/p>\n

People in the area reportedly heard the sounds of the explosions and the activation of the Iranian battery defence systems. A US official told\u00a0ABC News<\/a>\u00a0the strikes came from Israel and were meant to target Iran. The retaliatory strike has not been officially confirmed by Israel, which declined to comment.<\/p>\n

Commercial flights around western Iran were diverted from their routes early on Friday morning without explanation. Iranian-based Fars news agency claimed it was because \u201cexplosions\u201d were heard over Isfahan, the city about 215 miles (350km) south of Tehran.<\/p>
