Edward Bawa, the Member of Parliament for Bongo, has commended the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) for penalising board members of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).<\/p>\n

On Monday, April 15, PURC imposed a substantial fine of Five Million, Eight Hundred and Sixty-Eight Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHS 5,868,000.00) on ECG board members who served from January 1 to March 18, 2024.<\/p>\n

This penalty was due to their breach of Regulation 39 of L.I. 2413, which mandates prior notification to consumers before any power disruption.<\/p>\n

The fine affected several individuals, including Keli Gadzekpo, who stepped down as Board Chair on March 26, and the current ECG Managing Director, Samuel Dubik Mahama.<\/p>\n

In a letter dated March 18, PURC had instructed ECG to issue a load-shedding timetable by April 2, 2024, a directive that was blatantly ignored without any justification.<\/p>\n

According to PURC\u2019s letter, their analysis of the submitted data revealed that 4142 outages occurred during the period.<\/p>\n

In an interview on Face to Face<\/strong> <\/em>on Citi TV with Umaru Sanda Amadu, Bawa praised PURC, stating, \u201cThumbs up to PURC, if we have good and strong regulations and regulators are up to their job, usually you have sectors working very well. Congratulations to all the current PURC commissioners.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bawa dismissed ECG\u2019s claims about some 360 overloaded transformers.<\/p>\n

\u201cPURC just confirmed what all of us knew, because it was a bit weird that the only time you [ECG] were dealing with the transformers was between 7 pm and 11 pm. Which was the period of peak, where Ghanaians needed time most. It was a bit weird to have said that was the time you are doing your transformers; it doesn\u2019t make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Commissioner of the PURC, Ishmael Edjekumhene, speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show<\/strong><\/em>, dismissed claims by ECG regarding some 360 overloaded transformers.<\/p>\n
