FIFA Legal Committee accused of evading questions on controversial World Cup proposal put forward by Gianni Infantino.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Denmark\u2019s football chief has alleged that \u200c\u200cFIFA declined to answer \u201ccritical questions\u201d at a Legal Committee meeting about its proposal to sell commercial \u2060\u2060stakes in tournaments, as he \u2060\u2060renewed calls for President Gianni Infantino to step down.<\/p>\n

Danish FA (DBU) President Jesper Moller said he was surprised that the now-abandoned<\/a> FIFA Forward Enterprise was not on the agenda and was frustrated by the \u2060\u2060world football governing body\u2019s evasive response to his inquiries.<\/p>\n

\u201cI naturally used the meeting to ask a number of critical questions about the process, which I still consider to have been deeply problematic,\u201d Moller said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am surprised that \u2060\u2060FIFA Forward Enterprise has not been discussed by the Legal Committee, which is precisely the body that should be consulted on legal matters concerning FIFA.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut unfortunately, it proved impossible to get answers to the questions, as FIFA wants to await the discussion at the upcoming Council meeting in October.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis would clearly have been a good opportunity for FIFA\u2019s leadership to explain itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Al Jazeera has \u200c\u200ccontacted FIFA for comment.<\/p>\n

The FIFA Council comprises 37 members, including President Infantino, eight vice-presidents and 28 other members elected by member associations.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will continue to push for answers and I am confident that we will get to the bottom of this completely unacceptable matter,\u201d Moller added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe meeting confirmed that FIFA cannot rebuild its credibility under the current leadership. The time has come for a change of president at FIFA.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Credible alternative\u2019 to Infantino as FIFA President<\/h2>\n

Last month, the DBU vowed to find a credible alternative to Infantino in next year\u2019s election<\/a>, saying it had lost confidence in the Swiss-Italian \u2060\u2060after his aborted proposal to sell commercial stakes<\/a> in FIFA tournaments, including the World Cup.<\/p>\n

\u201cI \u2060\u2060will continue working closely with my European colleagues to find a candidate who can command a majority. There is no trust in Infantino and FIFA\u2019s leadership,\u201d Moller said.<\/p>\n

FIFA had apologised to member associations for mistakes made over the abandoned proposal, but its leadership reaffirmed support for Infantino after \u2060\u2060a crisis meeting in Morocco.<\/p>\n

The DBU said Infantino\u2019s proposal had created \u201ca fundamental crisis of confidence in FIFA\u2019s leadership\u201d that could not be repaired by withdrawals or apologies.<\/p>\n

However, Infantino can count \u2060\u2060on enough votes to win re-election<\/a>, meaning his opponents will need to \u2060\u2060shift strategy and focus on curbing his powers, multiple sources familiar with the discussions told Reuters.<\/p>\n

The FIFA presidential election will be in Rabat on March 18, 2027.<\/p>\n

Infantino\u2019s plan prompted a global backlash, with UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation and North America\u2019s CONCACAF among those calling for change at the top \u200c\u200cof FIFA while the possibility of a no-confidence vote was also discussed.<\/p>\n

Several European national associations have since withdrawn backing for Infantino\u2019s re-election, including the French Football Federation on Thursday and Austria\u2019s FA (OFB).<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Supervisory Board of the OFB \u200c\u200cunanimously \u200c\u200cdecided not to support Gianni Infantino\u2019s renewed candidacy as FIFA President,\u201d it said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe basis for this decision is the developments of recent weeks and months and the resulting significant changes in the framework conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
