A Ghanaian industrialist and economist, Tsonam Cleanse Akpeloo, has achieved a historic milestone by being elected as Chairperson of the Trade and Industry Cluster of the African Union Economic, Social, and Cultural Council (AU ECOSOCC). He was elected during the Second Ordinary Session of its 4th Permanent General Assembly (PGA) held in Nairobi, Kenya from December 11 to 13, 2024. His election marks the first time a West African has ascended to this influential position.<\/p>\n

Mr. Akpeloo\u2019s election underscores his significant contributions to trade and industry in Africa, as well as his commitment to advancing economic development across the continent. As Chairperson, he will play a key role in shaping and implementing strategies to promote trade, industrialization, and economic integration within the African Union framework.<\/p>\n

Mr. Akpeloo who is CEO of SUKU Technologies in Ghana, also serves as the Chair of the Accra Region of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI). His extensive experience in industrial advocacy and trade promotion uniquely positions him to champion initiatives that align with the continent\u2019s economic ambitions.<\/p>\n

The news of his election has been met with widespread commendations from notable figures in African trade and governance. Ambassador Albert Muchanga, the African Union Commissioner for Economic Development, Trade, Tourism, Industry and Minerals extended his congratulations, emphasizing the importance of Mr. Akpeloo\u2019s leadership in driving forward the continent\u2019s trade and industrial agenda.<\/p>\n

Mr. Prudence Sebahizi, Rwanda\u2019s Trade and Industry Minister, also lauded Mr. Akpeloo\u2019s election, describing it as a moment of pride not only for Ghana and West Africa but for the entire African continent. He further recalled his time as part of the technical team that developed the framework of AfCFTA, highlighting the invaluable support and cooperation he received from Mr. Akpeloo during that critical process.<\/p>\n
