Iran has launched aerial drones at Israel, appearing to mark a widely anticipated reprisal attack.<\/p>\n

Israeli TV said the salvo was expected to reach Israel at 02:00 on Sunday (23:00 GMT on Saturday).<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Guards said they had launched missiles as well as drones \u201cat specific targets\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said they were on high alert and \u201cmonitoring all targets\u201d. Israel\u2019s prime minster convened a meeting of his war cabinet.<\/p>\n

Israel, Lebanon and Iraq have closed their airspaces, and Syria and Jordan have put their air defences on alert.<\/p>\n

Iran had vowed to retaliate for an attack on its consulate in Syria on 1 April, which killed seven military officers, including a top commander.<\/p>\n

It accused Israel of carrying out that attack. Israel neither confirmed nor denied it.<\/p>\n

Shortly before news of Iran\u2019s drone launches, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country\u2019s \u201cdefensive systems\u201d were deployed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are ready for any scenario, both defensively and offensively. The State of Israel is strong. The IDF is strong. The public is strong.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe appreciate the US standing alongside Israel, as well as the support of Britain, France and many other countries.\u201d<\/p>\n

After news broke of the attack, US National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said: \u201cPresident Biden has been clear: our support for Israel\u2019s security is ironclad.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe United States will stand with the people of Israel and support their defence against these threats from Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak condemned Iran\u2019s \u201creckless\u201d attack, vowing that the UK would \u201ccontinue to stand up for Israel\u2019s security and that of all our regional partners\u201d.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) \u2013 the most powerful branch of its armed forces \u2013 said it had launched the attack \u201cin retaliation against the Zionist regime\u2019s [Israel] repeated crimes, including the attack on the Iranian embassy\u2019s consulate in Damascus\u201d.<\/p>\n
