The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has agreed with Senegal and Gambia to facilitate the importation of petroleum products from Ghana to these countries. This adds to the list of existing partners, including Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire, and Togo.<\/p>\n

In 2023, Ghana re-exported and transited 385,154,100 litres of petroleum products to its neighbouring countries. At the Ghana International Petroleum Conference (GhiPCon), NPA CEO Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid highlighted this growth as a testament to the NPA\u2019s efforts in curbing illicit fuel activities.<\/p>\n

The industry now has over 3,000 registered service providers, significantly involving local participants. These providers deliver over four million metric tonnes of petroleum products annually to Ghana and other countries, establishing the sector as a key contributor to Ghana\u2019s GDP growth.<\/p>\n

Dr. Abdul-Hamid stated, \u201cWe estimate that the sector had a monetary value of over GH\u00a271 billion, representing about 84% of the country\u2019s 2023 GDP. Over the past seven years, the industry has returned an average annual value of over GH\u00a235 billion.\u201d<\/p>\n

The NPA is committed to leveraging technology and innovation to stay relevant in the sub-region. By formulating and implementing strategies and policies, they aim to ensure efficiency, profitability, and value for money for consumers.<\/p>\n

Dr. Abdul-Hamid also mentioned that pricing reforms have evolved from annual regulated prices with unpaid subsidies to bi-weekly and daily regulated pricing, thanks to the new transparent automatic price adjustment formula.<\/p>\n

The NPA has declared zero tolerance for toxic fuel, leading countries like Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Morocco to consume low-sulphur fuels with typical imports at less than 50 ppm. A roadmap for local refineries to comply has been established.<\/p>\n

To ensure the integrity of the quality and quantity of petroleum products, the NPA has implemented technology-based schemes such as the petroleum marking scheme, bulk road vehicle tracking project, electronic cargo tracking system, and enterprise relational database management software.<\/p>\n

The Minister of Energy, on behalf of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, commended the NPA for its strategic management of the \u201cGold for Oil\u201d programme and the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM). These initiatives have bolstered investor confidence in the sector.<\/p>\n

The Vice President challenged the NPA to continue investing in infrastructure, leveraging cutting-edge technology, and enhancing supply chain resilience to secure Ghana\u2019s energy future. He emphasized that given geopolitical tensions, technological advancements, and environmental concerns, the strategies must be robust, innovative, and adaptable.<\/p>\n

He also assured the government\u2019s commitment to promoting policies that enhance Ghanaian content, support capacity building, and create opportunities for the Ghanaian people. This approach aims to ensure that the benefits of Ghana\u2019s resources are widely shared, fostering the development of the local workforce and businesses.<\/p>\n
