Conmebol has opened an investigation into the chaotic scenes involving Uruguay striker Darwin Nunez and Colombia fans at the Copa America in the United States.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Liverpool forward Nunez was embroiled in an altercation with spectators following Colombia\u2019s 1-0 victory over Uruguay in Wednesday\u2019s semi-final in Charlotte, North Carolina.<\/p>\n

The incident occurred in a section of the stadium where many family members of the Uruguay players were seated.<\/p>\n

Conmebol, South American football\u2019s governing body, issued a statement condemning the violence:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is unacceptable that an incident like this turns passion into violence. On the eve of the final of Copa America, we want to reaffirm and warn that no action will be tolerated that tarnishes this global football celebration, which involves both the players and the fans present in the stadium.\u201d<\/p>\n

The governing body emphasised its intention to \u201cunderstand the sequence of events\u201d that led to the disturbance.<\/p>\n

The disorder erupted after Colombia\u2019s victory, which secured their place in the final against Argentina on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Nunez climbed the railings and made his way into the crowded stands to protect his family, who were perceived to be in danger.<\/p>\n

Uruguay captain Jose Maria Gimenez commented on the situation: \u201cThere was no police, and we had to defend our families. This is the fault of two or three people who had a few too many drinks and don\u2019t know how to drink.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the altercation cooled down, Nunez was seen hugging his son on the pitch. The striker has not yet commented publicly on the incident.<\/p>\n

As Conmebol investigates the matter, the focus now shifts to the upcoming final, where Colombia will face Argentina.<\/p>\n
