Turkey defender Merih Demiral has been given a two-match ban for making an ultra-nationalist salute during his country\u2019s Euro 2024 win against Austria.<\/p>\n

Demiral, 26, scored both Turkey\u2019s goals as they beat Austria 2-1 to earn a quarter-final spot against the Netherlands on Saturday.<\/p>\n

The Al-Ahli defender celebrated his second goal with a \u2018wolf salute\u2019, a gesture associated with the far-right extremist group Grey Wolves that is linked with Turkey\u2019s ruling coalition party the National Movement Party.<\/p>\n

Demiral said the salute, which is banned in Austria and France,\u00a0was pre-planned\u00a0in case he scored in the last-16 tie.<\/p>\n

He was charged by Uefa \u2013 European football\u2019s governing body \u2013 for failing to comply with general principles of conduct, for violating the basic rules of decent conduct, for using sports events for manifestations of a non-sporting nature and for bringing the sport of football into disrepute.<\/p>\n

Jude Bellingham is free to play\u00a0in England\u2019s quarter-final against Switzerland on Saturday after making a crotch-grabbing gesture as he celebrated scoring in the last-16 win over Slovakia.<\/p>\n

The Real Madrid midfielder, 21, has been given a one-match \u2013 suspended for a year \u2013 and has also been fined \u00a325,400 (30,000 Euros).<\/p>\n

Osman Ask\u0131n Bak, Turkey\u2019s minister of youth and sports,\u00a0responded to Demiral\u2019s sanction on X, saying:,\u00a0external<\/span>\u00a0\u201cWe condemn Uefa\u2019s unfair and biased decision, which we believe has no legal basis and is entirely political.<\/p>\n
