United States President Donald Trump has used the opening weekend of the nation\u2019s 250th anniversary celebrations to praise the US military and critique democratic socialists, warning of a \u201ccommunist menace\u201d that he claims poses a major threat to the country.<\/p>\n

Speaking beneath the granite monument at Mount Rushmore on the eve of Independence Day on July 4, Trump invoked national identity and ideology ahead of the November midterm elections.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe created the strongest and most powerful military. We won two world wars,\u201d he said, claiming that the Cold War had left the US\u2019s enemies \u201cin the depths of history\u201d.<\/p>\n

He also said the US \u201cbeat Venezuela in one day\u201d and \u201cknocked the hell out of Iran\u201d.<\/p>\n

The address comes amid voter concerns<\/a> over persistent inflation and elevated energy prices driven by the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran.<\/p>\n

Briefly addressing the Iran war, Trump said Tehran is \u201cdying to settle\u201d and that Washington had granted \u201ca week off for a funeral because we\u2019re nice\u201d, in reference to the days-long state funeral<\/a> being held for late Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a strike on the first day of the US-Israeli war.<\/p>\n

\u2018Communist menace\u2019<\/h2>\n

A larger chunk of Trump\u2019s address was focused on what he considers ideological threats at home.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is now a resurgence of the communist menace in our land, including from newcomers to our country who embrace ideas totally opposed to our way of life,\u201d the president said, calling communism \u201cthe enemy of the Constitution\u201d.<\/p>\n

He pledged that \u201cthe citizens of the United States of America will vanquish communism quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump tied his anti-communist rhetoric to a hardline immigration stance, suggesting that left-wing political figures and certain undocumented arrivals should be removed from the country.<\/p>\n

His remarks followed a string of recent progressive primary victories<\/a> in US states including New York, Colorado and Texas.<\/p>\n

He labelled the rise of democratic socialists the \u201cgreatest threat to our country since its founding\u201d, comparing the movement\u2019s potential impact with World War II and the September 11 attacks.<\/p>\n

He closed the address by calling the anniversary \u201cthe beginning of the golden age of America.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s \u2018grip on America steadily slipping away\u2019<\/h2>\n

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Republican strategist Eli Bremer said parts of the speech were unifying enough that they \u201ccould have been delivered by Ronald Reagan \u2026 45 years ago,\u201d but added that \u201cthe gap between the American left and the American right has really never been wider\u201d.<\/p>\n

However, Democratic strategist and former Obama campaign adviser, Ameshia Cross, told Al Jazeera that Trump wants to wipe out the country\u2019s diverse history.<\/p>\n

Trump \u201cis upset that there is a younger crop of Democrats who are running and winning across this country,\u201d she said, adding that the speech reflected \u201ca president who sees his grip on America steadily slipping away\u201d.<\/p>\n

She noted that it also came \u201con the heels of him losing a Supreme Court decision just a couple of days ago to eradicate birthright citizenship<\/a>\u201c.<\/p>\n

The address highlighted the contrasting visions framing the country\u2019s milestone anniversary.<\/p>\n

In New York, progressive Mayor Zohran Mamdani<\/a> offered an alternative narrative during a naturalisation ceremony, using a desk once belonging to George Washington to praise immigrants\u2019 contributions and frame civic dissent as patriotism.<\/p>\n

Democrats have also criticised the administration\u2019s handling of the anniversary, alleging a conservative group took control of 250th-anniversary planning from a previously bipartisan congressional commission.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
