Sports Analyst Jerome Otchere has expressed that the current condition of the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex reflects a lack of respect for the esteemed boxer, Azumah Nelson.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He attributed this to years of neglect on the part of the National Youth Authority that has deteriorated the facility and further criticized the authority responsible for its maintenance.<\/p>\n

In an interview with ChannelONE news,<\/strong> Otchere emphasized that the facility\u2019s present state does not honour the legacy of the legendary boxer.<\/p>\n

I look at the Azumah Nelson sports complex at Kaneshie and the first impression that comes to mind is that we are disrespecting the figure and personality of the great boxing athlete Azumah Nelson who is a Hall of Famer in the USA.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, we don\u2019t seem to give him that kind of recognition because of the name attached to that deteriorating complex we have named after him.<\/p>\n

And I know it\u2019s got to do more with financing.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t think the money is there for whatever work the system planned to do at the previously Kaneshie sports complex.<\/p>\n

The money is not there.<\/p>\n

The kind of work that they started was left at some point and everything they did is now in ruins.<\/p>\n

And that is not the kind of experience you want to have if you are talking about sports development.<\/p>\n

The Azumah Nelson Sports Complex was named after the legendary Ghanaian boxer Azumah Nelson.<\/p>\n

The facility was intended to serve as a multipurpose sports centre, accommodating over 40 different sporting disciplines upon completion.<\/p>\n

Also known as the Kaneshie Sports Complex, it was built in the 1970s during the era of the Supreme Military Council under General Acheampong.<\/p>\n

The complex served as a training base for teams during the 1978 AFCON, which Ghana hosted and won.<\/p>\n

It was also frequently used for football matches, particularly by Accra Hearts of Oak and Great Olympics in the Ghana Premier League, while the Accra Sports Stadium (then called the Ohene Djan Stadium) was being rebuilt in 2007.<\/strong><\/p>\n
