Accra, June 25, GNA \u2013 The Minority Caucus on the Energy Committee of Parliament has condemned the Public Utilities Regulatory (PURC) Commission\u2019s 3.49 per cent increase in electricity tariffs for the third quarter of 2026, describing it as a \u201cnaked political decision\u201d with no basis in economic logic.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

At a press conference on June 22,\u00a02026, the\u00a0PURC announced the upward adjustment barely a month after reducing tariffs by 4.81 per cent in the second quarter of 2026.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr\u00a0Collins Adomako-Mensah,\u00a0the\u00a0Deputy Ranking Member on the Energy Committee of Parliament,\u00a0said\u00a0the net effect of PURC\u2019s reviews since January 2025 was a cumulative increment of 26.82 per cent on electricity prices.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Addressing\u00a0a section of the media in Parliament House on Thursday, he said:\u00a0\u201cPURC justified the Q3 hike based on a 0.2 per cent depreciation of the Ghana Cedi against the US Dollar and a 1.58 per cent increase in natural gas costs.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr\u00a0Adomako-Mensah, also the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for\u00a0Afigya\u00a0Kwabre\u00a0North, argued that the fundamentals did not support the increase.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe cedi has\u00a0actually\u00a0appreciated\u00a0by almost 40 per cent against the dollar since January 2025. Interest rates have reduced from 27 per cent to 23 per cent, and the cost of gas has dropped by 1.58 per cent,\u201d he\u00a0stated.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Deputy Ranking Member added that Ghana\u2019s power generation mix had\u00a0remained\u00a0unchanged between April and July 2026, questioning the basis for the new hike.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

He, therefore warned that the increase would\u00a0worsen the already burdened cost of electricity and hurt the competitiveness of Ghana\u2019s industry and Small\u00a0Meduim\u00a0Enterprises (SMEs).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the NDC said they were going to introduce a 24-hour economy, Ghanaians thought they meant reliable and affordable power to ensure competitiveness and reduce cost of living. This latest tariff hike is another assault on Ghanaian industry and SMEs,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

With Ghana no longer under an International Monetary Fund (IMF) Extended Credit Facility,\u00a0Mr\u00a0Adomako-Mensah said\u00a0government could no longer blame external lenders for tariff adjustments.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a tariff regime that has been\u00a0determined\u00a0by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the government owns every cedi increase.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe power to increase or reduce tariffs is determined by government policy direction, and the buck stops with the government,\u201d he\u00a0stated.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

He concluded with a warning: \u201cYou cannot keep increasing pressure on the top and hang the baskets of the people of Ghana to fetch water.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
