Hungary striker Barnabas Varga is okay in hospital following a concerning mid-air collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn during Sunday night\u2019s Euro 2024 match.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Varga sustained a fractured cheekbone from the incident and is scheduled to undergo surgery, Hungary manager Marco Rossi informed BBC Sport.<\/p>\n

\u201cVarga is okay,\u201d said Rossi. \u201cUnfortunately, he will be operated on because he suffered a fracture. We will see [what happens]. If we progress in the tournament, for sure, he will not be with us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rossi reassured that Varga is \u201chealthy\u201d and \u201cnot under any kind of risks.\u201d<\/p>\n

The match was halted for nearly seven minutes as Varga received extensive treatment on the pitch. He was eventually carried off on a stretcher, with sheets held around him to maintain privacy. The Hungarian Football Federation later confirmed via a post on X that Varga is in a hospital in Stuttgart, promising to provide updates on his status.<\/p>\n

The collision occurred during a tense moment in the match, with Hungary\u2019s players quickly signaling for medical help. Captain Dominik Szoboszlai and other teammates surrounded Varga, visibly distressed by his condition and assisting in bringing the stretcher onto the pitch. Rossi acknowledged the players\u2019 worries, noting that Varga appeared unconscious, which heightened the urgency of the situation.<\/p>\n

In the 10 minutes of additional time due to the injury, Hungary secured a dramatic late winner through Kevin Csoboth. This goal marked Hungary\u2019s first win in Euro 2024, following two consecutive losses. In the other Group A match, Germany managed a 1-1 draw against Switzerland. The hosts, Germany, top the group with seven points, while Switzerland, with five points, also advance to the round of 16. Both teams now await their opponents in the next stage of the tournament.<\/p>\n
