Accra, June 23, GNA \u2013 Parliament has pledged to support reforms that align with Ghana\u2019s legal framework and international standards to combat discrimination and exclusion against Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).<\/p>\n

Dr Clement Abas Apaak,\u00a0the\u00a0Deputy Minister of Education and\u00a0Member of Parliament (MP) for Builsa South, in a statement on the floor of Parliament,\u00a0on Tuesday, called for a review of the Disability Act,\u00a0(Act\u00a0715)\u00a0of 2006, to remove barriers facing PWDs in employment, access to public facilities, healthcare, education, and\u00a0general\u00a0welfare.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

He stressed that PWDs had\u00a0fundamental human rights that must be protected to ensure equity, social justice, and dignity.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Contributing to the statement, Madam\u00a0Ayii\u00a0Laadi\u00a0Ayamba,\u00a0the\u00a0MP for\u00a0Pusiga, said PWDs had the potential to contribute to national development and should be given a level playing field to thrive.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

She also raised concerns about youth suffering mental illness due to drug use, urging support for their rehabilitation.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr\u00a0Fred Kyei Asamoah,\u00a0the\u00a0MP for\u00a0Offinso\u00a0North, underscored the need to promote the welfare of PWDs, stressing that inclusion was key to national progress.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ghana\u2019s National Day for Persons with Disabilities is celebrated annually on June 23.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s theme, \u201cAccess to Technology and Assistive Devices for Persons with Disability,\u201d highlights the importance of digital inclusion and the role of assistive tools in enabling full participation in education, employment, healthcare, and civic life.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The observance complements the International Day of Persons with Disabilities marked globally on December 3,\u00a0established\u00a0by the United Nations to promote the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ghana\u2019s national celebration provides a platform for lawmakers, advocates, and institutions to push for reforms that strengthen inclusion, accessibility, and equity for over 2.1 million Ghanaians living with disabilities.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
