Accra, June 22, GNA \u2013 The ruling National Democratic Congress\u2019 (NDC) has\u00a0immortalised\u00a0its ideological Founder, former President Jerry John Rawlings\u00a0by\u00a0naming of the Party\u2019s Headquarters Building\u00a0located\u00a0at\u00a0Adababraka\u00a0in Accra, as the JJ Rawlings House.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0event\u00a0took place at the JJ Rawlings House\u00a0in\u00a0Adabraka\u00a0in Accra.\u00a0<\/p>\n

President\u00a0Mahama\u00a0together with\u00a0Mr\u00a0Johnson\u00a0Asiedu\u00a0Nketia, NDC National\u00a0Chairman;\u00a0Mr\u00a0Fifi\u00a0Fiavi\u00a0Kwetey, NDC General Secretary and the\u00a0Agyeman-Rawlings Family collectively unveiled a bust and plaque in\u00a0honour\u00a0of the NDC Founder.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Former President Rawlings, who\u00a0was\u00a0the longest serving Ghanaian leader,\u00a0was born on June 22, 1947, and passed on\u00a0November 12, 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He founded the NDC in 1992, which\u00a0subsequently\u00a0won the December 7,\u00a01992\u00a0general election,\u00a0ushering\u00a0in Fourth Republic on January 7, 1993.\u00a0<\/p>\n

President\u00a0Mahama,\u00a0in his address,\u00a0said: \u201cToday is a day of remembrance.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0a day of gratitude and renewal. It\u2019s a day that invites us to reflect on our journey as a political movement.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

He added:\u00a0\u201cWe\u00a0honor the sacrifices of those who came before us and to recommit ourselves to the ideals that have guided our political tradition through the decades.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

President Mahama\u00a0said the ceremony was not merely about renaming a building and unveiling a\u00a0monument but was also\u00a0about preserving history, celebrating\u00a0leadership\u00a0and passing on enduring values to future generations.\u00a0<\/p>\n

President\u00a0Mahama, who is\u00a0also\u00a0the current leader of the governing\u00a0NDC, noted\u00a0that every enduring institution rests on the sacrifices of men and women who dedicate themselves to courses greater than their personal interests.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said political movements in particular derive their strength not only from their organizational structures, but also from the principles, the convictions and leadership that inspire their members.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOur party has been shaped by countless patriots who work tirelessly often in difficult circumstances to advance the course of social justice, democratic governance, national development and the empowerment of their ordinary citizens,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cSo today we\u00a0honour\u00a0one of the most influential figures on that journey. The man we commemorate today, Jerry John Rawlings as a man whose leadership courage and unwavering commitment to the ideals of probity, accountability and social justice and national service have helped shape the political tradition from which our Party\u00a0emerged,\u201d\u00a0President Mahama added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

President\u00a0Mahama\u00a0said beyond being a former president of the Republic,\u00a0former\u00a0President Rawlings\u00a0was a transformative figure whose vision inspired generations of Ghanaians and whose determination laid the foundations for the democratic stability and political freedoms that we now enjoy today as a nation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He was a leader who challenged the status quo when he believed the interests of ordinary\u00a0Ghanaian people were being neglected,\u00a0devoted his life to empowering the disadvantage, promoted\u00a0accountability in public\u00a0life\u00a0and building a nation founded on fairness,\u00a0justice\u00a0and opportunity.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

President\u00a0Mahama\u00a0said\u00a0in naming\u00a0the\u00a0headquarters\u00a0after\u00a0former President Rawlings\u00a0was therefore not only a tribute to his immense contribution to the\u00a0party and their nation, but also a declaration that the values he championed-\u00a0integrity, patriotism, sacrifice, courage, discipline and service-\u00a0to the people must continue to guide\u00a0the actions the\u00a0party and\u00a0the\u00a0government.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The President said the event should serve\u00a0as a constant reminder to everyone who enters this building that leadership is\u00a0ultimately about\u00a0service,\u00a0and that political power must always be exercised in the interests of the people.\u00a0<\/p>\n

President Mahama said:\u00a0\u201cThis Headquarters is more than an administrative facility. It is the operational\u00a0heart\u00a0of our Party. It is a place where ideas are debated, policies are formulated, manifest tools are written, strategies and decisions are made in pursuit of our mission to serve the people of Ghana.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is where generations\u00a0of\u00a0the Party\u00a0faithful\u00a0have gathered\u00a0in moments of triumph\u00a0and been\u00a0guided in moments of challenge. It is where our collective aspirations for a\u00a0Better Ghana or a\u00a0Reset\u00a0Agenda are translated into\u00a0programmes\u00a0and actions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

President\u00a0Mahama\u00a0said by naming the NDC Headquarters after Jerry Rawlings,\u00a0the\u00a0party faithful\u00a0were embedding their history in the very fabric of the Party and ensuring that future generations would never lose sight of the values and sacrifices that had\u00a0brought\u00a0them that\u00a0far.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe unveiling of this bust holds similar significance. Across the world, nations honor their\u00a0statesmen\u00a0and women with monuments and memorials that preserve their memory and inspire future generations,\u201d\u00a0he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cSuch monuments are not erected merely to commemorate the individual. They are intended to remind us of the ideals and principles for which those individuals stood. And\u00a0so,\u00a0as we unveil this bust today, we celebrate not only Jerry\u00a0Rawlings\u00a0life, but also the values he\u00a0embodied.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe celebrate his courage and leadership. We celebrate his conviction in times of uncertainty. We celebrate his commitment to national service.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said they celebrate,\u00a0enjoy\u00a0and believe that public\u00a0office\u00a0should be used to improve the lives of\u00a0ordinary\u00a0citizens.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd so may this monument serve as a source of inspiration to all who see it. And a reminder that every generation has a responsibility to contribute to the progress of our nation.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said former President Rawlings himself, if he were alive, would have been\u00a0very uncomfortable\u00a0with the ceremony they were holding, by which they\u00a0sought\u00a0to\u00a0immortalize\u00a0his name.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He recalled that\u00a0the former President\u2019s life\u2019s time, he resisted all attempts to name significant monuments after him, citing an instance when the\u00a0politely declined to have the University for Development Studies named after him, even though he had given up his World Food Price Award as seed funding to start that\u00a0university.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHe replied to my letter during my previous Presidency. When I wrote to seek his permission to name the FPSO for the ENI\u00a0Sankofa\u00a0field after him,\u00a0he said,\u00a0\u201cpass it on to President\u00a0Kufuor.\u201d\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

President\u00a0Mahama\u00a0said former President Rawlings preferred to have his name inscribed in the minds and hearts of men done on statues and monuments.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

President Mahama said:\u00a0\u201cFortunately for us today, he is in no position to object to what we are doing here to\u00a0immortalize\u00a0his name.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr\u00a0Kimathi\u00a0Agyeman-Rawlings, the son of former President Rawlings on behalf of the\u00a0Agyeman-Rawlings Family expressed gratitude to President\u00a0Mahama\u00a0and the NDC for the\u00a0honour\u00a0done to their late father.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said the day had been much more than a ceremonial occasion,\u00a0stating\u00a0that it had been a moment of reflection,\u00a0remembrance\u00a0and recommitment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said by naming the NDC Headquarters after former President Rawlings, the Party had permanently inscribed his name into the very home of the ideals,\u00a0sacrifices\u00a0and aspirations to which he devoted his life.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe enduring recognition is not simply about honoring a man, it is about preserving and reaffirming the values that inspired a movement and helped shape a nation,\u201d\u00a0Mr\u00a0Agyeman-Rawlings said\u00a0<\/p>\n
