A diplomatic row between United States President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has escalated, with Italy\u2019s top diplomat cancelling an upcoming visit to the US.<\/p>\n

At issue is Trump\u2019s claim that Meloni \u201cbegged\u201d him for a photograph during the Group of Seven (G7) meeting in France earlier in the week.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s probably happy I talked to her. I didn\u2019t have to talk to her,\u201d Trump reportedly told the Italian La7 network. The broadcaster only published a dubbed Italian version of the interview, not the original English version.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe begged me to take a picture with her. She wanted a picture with me so badly. I wouldn\u2019t have taken it, but I felt sorry for her.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Friday, Meloni posted a video answering Trump\u2019s statement, saying\u00a0that \u201ccertain things deserve an immediate response\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDonald Trump\u2019s statements are completely fabricated. I am frankly stunned,\u201d she said. \u201cI don\u2019t know why the president of the United States behaves this way toward his own allies. After all, this isn\u2019t the first time this has happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

The head of a far-right party who campaigned on an anti-immigrant platform, Meloni had long been seen as one of Trump\u2019s most supportive counterparts in Europe.<\/p>\n

She had met with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate following his 2024 election victory and attended his inauguration in January 2025.<\/p>\n

However, the pair have diverged<\/a> during Trump\u2019s second term over several issues, including support for Ukraine amid Russia\u2019s invasion, the US-Israeli war with Iran, Trump\u2019s threats to seize the Danish territory of Greenland and his criticism of Pope Leo.<\/p>\n

In her video, Meloni said it was a \u201cshame\u201d Trump did not show \u201cthe same resolve toward the enemies of the West, toward the enemies of the United States\u201d as he did in his statements against her.<\/p>\n

She accused the US president of being \u201cmuch more accommodating\u201d to foes than allies.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut there\u2019s one thing he must remember: Italy and I do not beg,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Shortly after Meloni posted the video, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said he was cancelling a weekend trip to the US, where he was scheduled to attend a business forum in Miami, Florida and meet with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.<\/p>\n

He called Trump\u2019s reported statements \u201cserious and offensive\u201d. Several other government officials also weighed in.<\/p>\n

Justice Minister Carlo Nordio suggested Trump\u2019s remarks besmirched the legacy of the US soldiers who died during World War II.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe thousands of crosses marking the graves of American soldiers who died to free us from Nazi-Fascist dictatorship did not deserve such a painful blow to our fraternal ties,\u201d Nordio posted on X.<\/p>\n

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said he did not believe Meloni would ever beg for a photo, \u201cnot even under threat\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cJokes of this kind do no good to anyone: neither to the USA, nor to Italy, nor to the alliance,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The White House did not immediately respond to Meloni\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
