A shipwreck in the east of the Democratic Republic of\u00a0Congo\u00a0(DRC) has killed more than 80 people, the\u00a0Congolese president\u2019s office said Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe President of the Republic is calling for an investigation into the true causes of this unfortunate incident, to prevent such a disaster from happening again in the future,\u201d the office said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The ship sank in the Kwa River, 70 kilometers away from the city of Mushie, in the province of Ma\u00ef-Ndombe, according to the statement.<\/p>\n

The president of the DRC, F\u00e9lix Tshisekedi, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.<\/p>\n

Deadly shipwrecks are unfortunately frequent in the DRC as the country lacks road infrastructure and many people rely on boats to cross the many branches of the\u00a0Congo\u00a0River which runs alongside the country\u2019s western border.<\/p>\n

In October last year,\u00a0at least 52 people were killed<\/a> in the northwestern part of the country after a boat carrying more than 300 passengers capsized in the Congo River, authorities said at the time.<\/p>\n

Another six people\u00a0were killed months earlier<\/a>\u00a0in the DRC\u2019s Lake Kivu after a boat carrying 150 villagers overturned.<\/p>\n

The DRC only has one kilometer of paved road per 1,000 square kilometers compared to the 16 kilometers average for low-income countries, according to a\u00a0report<\/a>\u00a0published by the World Bank.<\/p>
