aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p>After Democrats delivered a once-in-a-generation midterm thumping of Republicans in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/us-midterm-elections-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United States midterms<\/a>, their current leader, Chuck Schumer, has expressed confidence he will helm his party\u2019s larger-than-expected majority in the US Senate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll be re-elected as majority leader,\u201d the New York Democrat told reporters in Washington on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<section class=\"more-on\">\n<h2 calls for change reached a fever pitch among voters in this week\u2019s pivotal elections, not every newly elected Senate Democrat is open to the idea of having Schumer, a 75-year-old stalwart of the chamber, reprise his role as the head of their agenda.<\/p>\n<p>At least seven incoming Democratic freshmen have publicly suggested \u2013 or said outright \u2013 they will not commit to supporting Schumer in next month\u2019s leadership vote:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Illinois Senator-elect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/amp\/news\/2026\/11\/4\/firsts-for-women-and-minorities-in-us-midterm-elections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Juliana Stratton<\/a>, through a spokesperson, said she will not support Schumer.<\/li>\n<li>Kansas Senator-elect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/11\/4\/kansas-elects-democrat-adam-hamilton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adam Hamilton<\/a> told CNN in September: \u201cI\u2019m not supporting Schumer\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Maine Senator-elect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/11\/4\/democrat-troy-jackson-wins-maine-us-senate-seat-in-blow-to-republicans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Troy Jackson<\/a> said on Monday he told Schumer he will \u201csupport somebody else\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Michigan Senator-elect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/11\/4\/el-sayed-defeats-rogers-to-win-senate-seat-in-michigan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Abdul El-Sayed<\/a> reiterated in an interview with CNN on Thursday that he will support his soon-to-be Democratic colleague, Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, as leader.<\/li>\n<li>Minnesota Senator-elect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/11\/4\/firsts-for-women-and-minorities-in-us-midterm-elections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peggy Flanagan<\/a> told reporters on Wednesday, \u201cIt is time for new leadership\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>New Hampshire Senator-elect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/amp\/news\/2026\/11\/4\/democrats-win-control-of-house-and-senate-key-us-midterms-takeaways\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chris Pappas<\/a> said in an interview last week that \u201cvoters are hungry for \u2026 a new generation of leadership in the Senate\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Texas Senator-elect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/11\/4\/talarico-wins-texas-senate-race-ending-decades-of-republican-dominance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James Talarico<\/a> has called for \u201cnew blood\u201d in Washington, and since being elected, has indicated he wanted to \u201chear about [Schumer\u2019s] vision\u201d for the Senate before committing to back him.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Jackson has openly questioned Schumer\u2019s ability to connect with working-class voters, while Flanagan\u2019s staff has said the senator-elect wants \u201ca progressive champion\u201d who will shepherd Democrats through the final two years of Donald Trump\u2019s presidency and into 2028.<\/p>\n<p>New members, like El-Sayed, may not be won over after Schumer backed the former public health official\u2019s opponent, Haley Stevens, in Michigan\u2019s Democratic primary.<\/p>\n<p>Schumer, the first Jewish Senate leader, has often found himself at the centre of brewing cultural and foreign-policy debates within his party.<\/p>\n<p>In remarks that were posted online in February, Schumer told Jewish leaders in New York City one of his core duties was \u201cto fight for aid to Israel\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe delivered more security assistance to Israel, our ally, under my leadership than ever, ever before\u201d, he said. \u201cWe will keep doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schumer has also faced fierce criticism for not doing enough to block Trump\u2019s cabinet members from being confirmed. Some have even chastised the leader for retreating during last year\u2019s government shutdown after he backed a Republican bill to reopen federal agencies without getting anything in return.<\/p>\n<p>Critics in his party, including California Governor Gavin Newsom, called that a \u201ccapitulation\u201d that abandoned key Democratic priorities, like healthcare subsidies. Michigan Congresswoman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/11\/11\/us-senate-votes-to-end-shutdown-why-democrats-are-upset-with-chuck-schumer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rashida Tlaib said Schumer<\/a> should have stepped down as leader over the matter.<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic leader said on Wednesday the party\u2019s new Senate plan would include launching investigations into the Trump administration, challenging the president\u2019s agenda and ending his war in Iran.<\/p>\n<p>However, that\u2019s not good enough for some current members, like Van Hollen, who recently told Bloomberg that Democrats should not commit to Schumer without promises of a \u201cbold agenda\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Before Tuesday\u2019s election, a senior campaign staff member for Senator Jon Ossoff, who was easily re-elected to his seat, would not say whether the Georgia Democrat would back Schumer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not have an answer,\u201d the Ossoff source told Al Jazeera. \u201cWe can do all the fantasy football stuff later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Democratic lawmakers return to Washington next week, voters and Democratic-aligned groups will likely pressure them to support an alternative candidate.<\/p>\n<p>After calling for new leadership after the election, Indivisible, a progressive US-based organisation that bills itself as a movement \u201cto stop the rise of authoritarianism\u201d, released a memo on Thursday detailing their opposition to Schumer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3652535\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3652535\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-3652535\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/AP25108060824636-1744982682.jpg?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C513&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"Senator Chris Van Hollen, right, frequently mentioned as a possible candidate for Senate Democratic leader, speaks with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran citizen who was living in Maryland and deported to El Salvador by the Trump administration, in San Salvador, El Salvador\" fetchpriority=\"low\" title=\"\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3652535\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Senator Chris Van Hollen, right, frequently mentioned as a possible candidate for Senate Democratic leader, speaks with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran citizen who was living in Maryland and deported to El Salvador by the Trump administration, in San Salvador, El Salvador [File: Press Office Senator Van Hollen via AP]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cEveryone with a Democratic senator \u2013 including those with newly-elected senators on their way to DC \u2013 should be demanding a contested leadership election, not a cleared field for Schumer\u201d, the memo read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny Democrat who is considering business as usual, or unwilling to fight at a level that matches the public\u2019s demand for action \u2013 is not qualified to lead the party at this moment. Who leads the party in this era must be an open question, not a coronation. It\u2019s time to define what the next era of the Democratic Party will be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Al Jazeera asked Schumer\u2019s office how he plans to address those concerns and whether he is speaking with frustrated Democrats, but it has not yet responded.<\/p>\n<p>To be re-elected, Schumer needs a simple majority of the Democratic Senate caucus, projected to comprise 54-56 members, and Schumer, who previously served as majority leader during the duration of former President Biden\u2019s term in office, still has allies he can count on.<\/p>\n<p>One of those is Democratic Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey, who told ABC on Wednesday that he commended Schumer\u2019s handling of the midterms, saying he delivered \u201cone of the most historic sweeps\u201d for the party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re gonna have a family discussion,\u201d Booker said. \u201cBut I think America should give \u2026 Chuck Schumer his due for what we were able to achieve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked Wednesday about building criticism of his leadership, Schumer demurred, saying Tuesday\u2019s elections were \u201cnot about\u201d him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is about the American people and what they want and what they need and what we can do to help them.
