The\u00a0Netherlands\u00a0have been dealt a blow ahead of the start of the European Championships this week after\u00a0Frenkie de Jong\u00a0was ruled out of the tournament on Monday.<\/p>\n

De Jong, who has 54 caps for his country, missed Bar\u00e7a\u2019s final six games of the season after sustaining his third ankle of the campaign in the Cl\u00e1sico defeat against Real Madrid in April.<\/p>\n

Speaking after the 4-0 win over Iceland, Koeman criticised Bar\u00e7a\u2019s management of De Jong\u2019s injuries this season.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey took a risk with Frenkie and now we suffer the consequences,\u201d Koeman told NOS.<\/p>\n

Despite that, the midfielder was named in Ronald Koeman\u2019s\u00a026-player squad for the Euros\u00a0in Germany with the expectation he would be able to feature in the finals.<\/p>\n

However, the Netherlands confirmed in a short statement that De Jong had lost \u201ca race against time\u201d and would not be fit enough to play any part in the tournament.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sad and disappointed that I won\u2019t make it to the Euros,\u201d De Jong said in a post on social media.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been doing a lot of work in the past few weeks, but my ankle needs more time, unfortunately.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a dream and the greatest honour to represent our country in a major tournament, but now, like the entire nation, I will cheer for our team from the sidelines.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Jong will now return to Barcelona to continue his recovery work.<\/p>\n

Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen has been called up in his place.<\/p>\n

However, the Netherlands were dealt a fresh injury blow on Friday the Dutch Football Federation (KNVB) confirmed on Tuesday that Teun Koopmeiners will also miss the tournament after sustaining an injury in their final warm-up match against Iceland.<\/p>\n

The Netherlands kick off their tournament against\u00a0Poland\u00a0on June 16, with games against\u00a0France\u00a0and\u00a0Austria\u00a0to follow in the group stage.<\/p>
