The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the government of applying justice selectively and undermining key legal institutions.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It cited the handling of the conviction of former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive, Sedina Christine Tamakloe Attionu, and the implementation of the Legal Education Act, 2026 (Act 1170).<\/p>\n

The party said the developments reflected what it described as a growing pattern of unequal accountability since the National Democratic Congress (NDC) assumed office on January 7, 2025.<\/p>\n

In a statement signed and issued by the Co-Chair of the NPP Constitutional and Legal Affairs Policy Committee, Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, who is also the NPP Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem Central, the party expressed concern over what it termed efforts to weaken the rule of law and state institutions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe call on the government to allow the lawful sentence imposed on Ms Attionu to stand, free of any extra-judicial interference, and to suspend the unlawful Pre-Bar regime,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n

Selective justice<\/h2>\n

The NPP alleged that state security agencies, including the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), National Security and the Police, had increasingly targeted political opponents, journalists and commentators through arrests and restrictive bail conditions.<\/p>\n

The party said while opposition figures faced prosecution, some high-profile corruption cases inherited from the previous administration had either been discontinued or settled.<\/p>\n

The statement cited the UniBank prosecution and the Saglemi Housing case as examples, arguing that the trend created the impression of unequal treatment before the law.<\/p>\n

Sedina Tamakloe’s conviction<\/h2>\n

The NPP described the conviction of Ms Attionu as one of the most significant corruption cases in recent years.<\/p>\n

It recalled that she was charged in 2019 on 78 counts, including stealing, money laundering, causing financial loss to the state and procurement breaches, following investigations by EOCO.<\/p>\n

The party noted that after failing to return from medical leave granted by the court in 2021, her trial proceeded in absentia, leading to her conviction and a 10-year prison sentence in April 2024.<\/p>\n

It further stated that following her extradition from the United States on June 9, 2026, she had been returned to Ghana to serve her sentence.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery convicted person retains a lawful right of appeal, but we caution against any extra-judicial intervention, whether administrative, political or discretionary, to neutralise a final sentence outside the appellate process,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n

Legal education reformsThe NPP also criticised the introduction of a mandatory one-year Pre-Bar Course under Act 1170, describing the measure as unlawful.<\/p>\n

It argued that the Act provided only for the LLB programme, Law Practice Training and the National Bar Examination and made no provision for a Pre-Bar stage.<\/p>\n

The party contended that the directive conflicted with the law’s transitional provisions and had created uncertainty for thousands of law graduates.<\/p>\n

The NPP called on the government to suspend implementation of the programme, constitute the Council for Legal Education and Training and develop the necessary regulations before proceeding with the reforms.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
