The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore\u00a0collapsed<\/a>\u00a0early Tuesday morning after it was struck by a large ship, according to video obtained by CNN.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is unclear if anyone was injured.<\/p>\n

Maryland Transportation Authority (MTA) says all traffic is being detoured.<\/p>\n

CNN has reached out to Baltimore City Fire Department for additional information.<\/p>\n

The 1.6-mile, four-lane bridge extends over the Patapsco River and serves as the outermost crossing of the Baltimore harbor and an essential link of Interstate-695, or the Baltimore Beltway.<\/p>\n

Available footage shows a towering boat headed directly toward one of the bridge\u2019s support columns before colliding with it, sending a massive stretch of the bridge crashing into the water below in mere seconds.<\/p>\n

The crash sent\u00a0large plumes of smoke and fire into the air and part of the bridge appeared to collapse over the front of the\u00a0boat, the footage showed.<\/p>\n

Dark smoke continued to rise into the air for several minutes.<\/p>\n

Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott says he is \u201caware of and en route to the incident at the Key Bridge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

The 1.6-mile-long Francis Scott Key Bridge extends over the Patapsco River\u00a0into the Port of Baltimore, according to the Maryland Transport Authority (MTA).<\/p>\n

The bridge, which opened in 1977, is named after the author of \u201cThe Star-Spangled Banner,\u201d the MTA says on its website. Francis Scott Key is\u00a0believed to have sat<\/a>\u00a0near the site of the bridge as he witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry in 1814, inspiring him to write the words of the US national anthem.<\/p>\n

The Port of Baltimore handled more than 52 million tons of international cargo worth over $80 billion last year \u2014 the ninth-highest total among US ports, according to the Maryland government\u2019s\u00a0website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The port supports 15,330 direct jobs and 139,180 jobs in Maryland, according to the site.<\/p>\n

Rescue crews are searching for at least seven people\u00a0in the Patapsco River after\u00a0multiple vehicles fell into the water when the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed overnight, a Baltimore City Fire Department spokesperson\u00a0told<\/a>\u00a0the Associated Press.<\/p>\n

Local agencies received 911 calls at around 1:30 a.m. ET\u00a0reporting\u00a0that a ship, traveling outbound from Baltimore, had struck a column on the bridge,\u00a0Kevin Cartwright, director of communications for the Baltimore Fire Department told AP.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cThis is a dire emergency,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/div>\n

\u201cOur focus right now is trying to rescue and recover these people,\u201d Cartwright told the outlet.<\/p>\n

The official\u00a0called the collapse a \u201cdeveloping mass casualty event.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/div>\n

Cartwright said it appeared there are \u201csome cargo or retainers hanging from the bridge,\u201d making conditions unsafe and unstable for emergency responders operating at the scene.<\/p>\n

CNN has reached out to Baltimore City Fire Department, Maryland Department of Transportation and US Coast Guard for additional information.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
