On the\u00a0Dallas Mavericks\u2019 fourth possession, superstar guard\u00a0Luka Doncic\u00a0tossed a look-ahead pass to\u00a0P.J. Washington\u00a0that led to a dunk. It was Doncic\u2019s lone assist of Game 1.<\/p>\n

Dallas\u2019 entire team had only nine assists in the\u00a0107-89\u00a0loss Thursday to the\u00a0Boston Celtics.<\/p>\n

Not coincidentally, the Mavs had their lowest-scoring outing of this postseason in the NBA Finals opener.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got to move the ball,\u201d Mavs coach Jason Kidd said. \u201cThe ball just stuck too much. And we\u2019ll be better in Game 2.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Celtics, the league\u2019s second-ranked defense this season, succeeded in defending Doncic and his co-star,\u00a0Kyrie Irving, without double-teaming.<\/p>\n

Doncic finished with 30 points on 12-of-26 shooting. Irving had an off night while primarily being guarded by six-time All-Defensive selection\u00a0Jrue Holiday, getting held to 12 points on 6-of-19 shooting with a team-high two assists.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust great individual defense,\u201d Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla said. \u201cEverybody has to take on the challenge of guarding those guys. They\u2019re an amazing team and they put a ton of pressure on you with their ability to score.<\/p>\n

Everyone is going to take their matchup personal, have personal pride in individual defense.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey mostly play one-on-one,\u201d Doncic said of the Celtics\u2019 defensive approach, which employed\u00a0Jaylen Brown\u00a0as the primary defender on him. \u201cThey don\u2019t send a lot of help. So that\u2019s why.\u201d<\/p>
