Foreign tourist spending in Busan rose during the week of BTS’ concert in the city, with traditional markets among the biggest beneficiaries, according to data released by BC Card Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The card company analyzed spending by about 54,700 foreign visitors who used overseas-issued payment cards at affiliated businesses in Busan during the June 7-13 concert week.<\/p>\n

BTS marked its 13th anniversary with a large-scale concert in Busan on Friday and Saturday, drawing about 55,000 fans to the stadium. City officials estimated that about 200,000 foreign visitors traveled to the city before and after the event.<\/p>\n

During the concert week, total foreign card spending in the city increased 5.7 percent from the previous week and 73.3 percent from the same period a year earlier. The number of transactions rose 38 percent from the previous week and 97.3 percent from a year earlier.<\/p>\n

Traditional markets saw particularly strong gains.<\/p>\n

Spending by foreign visitors at traditional markets nearly doubled from a week earlier, rising 99.8 percent, while the number of transactions increased 16.1 percent.<\/p>\n

These figures suggest large-scale K-pop events can boost spending at local businesses beyond major tourist attractions and shopping districts.<\/p>\n

Spending also increased in areas near the concert venue and transportation hubs. Foreign card spending rose 33.9 percent in Yeonje District and 142.3 percent in Dongnae District, both near Busan Asiad Main Stadium, where the concerts were held.<\/p>\n

By industry, accommodation services recorded the largest increase in spending, surging 227.8 percent from a week earlier. Beauty products, storage services and ginseng products followed, with spending rising 171.2 percent, 111.3 percent and 96.8 percent, respectively.<\/p>\n

Data also showed that the increase in accommodation spending was significantly larger than the increase in transaction volumes, suggesting that average spending per booking rose sharply ahead of the concert. <\/p>\n

Some accommodation providers in Busan came under fire after room rates increased more than tenfold around the BTS concert dates, while others were accused of canceling existing reservations and relisting rooms at significantly higher prices.<\/p>\n
