A couple of \u201cmagnet fishing\u201d enthusiasts say they pulled up a safe containing an estimated $100,000 (\u00a378,000) from a New York lake.<\/p>\n

James Kane and Barbie Agostini threw a rope with a magnet into a lake in Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens on Friday and pulled up the safe.<\/p>\n

Upon opening the secured box, they said they found it stuffed with bundles of water-damaged $100 bills.<\/p>\n

They\u00a0told NY1<\/a>\u00a0police told them the safe wasn\u2019t linked to any crime and that they were allowed to keep the money. The BBC has approached the New York Police Department (NYPD) for comment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have found plenty of safes before,\u201d Mr Kane said. \u201cAnd then I saw the numbers and thought: \u2018This is not possible.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe pulled it out and it was big stacks of freaking hundreds,\u201d he added. \u201cThese are thick stacks \u2013 they\u2019re soaking wet, they\u2019re pretty much destroyed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were no IDs, no way to find the original person, in the safe,\u201d Mrs Agostini said. \u201c[The police] were like: \u2018well, congratulations!’\u201d<\/p>\n

Magnet fishing involves trailing a line with a strong magnet through lakes and rivers and seeing what is pulled up.<\/p>\n

The couple said they began magnet fishing during the Covid-19 pandemic. They said they had previously found World War Two-era grenades, nineteenth-century guns and a full-size motorbike.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
