\nPolitical figure and legal advocate Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko has strongly condemned the reported arrest and detention of activists affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), describing the actions as a threat to democratic governance and freedom of expression in Ghana.
\nIn a press release issued from his office in Odumase Krobo, Agyarko said he was \u201cdeeply concerned\u201d by what he called the use of state power to suppress dissenting political opinions. He argued that the arrests undermine Ghana\u2019s democratic values and violate constitutional protections for free speech.
\nAgyarko referenced Article 21(1)(a) of Ghana\u2019s 1992 Constitution, which guarantees freedom of expression, and warned against what he described as a return to a \u201cculture of silence.\u201d He also criticized the use of criminal laws to target political opponents, saying that disagreements in a democracy should be addressed through debate rather than intimidation.
\nThe former minister urged institutions including the Ghana Police Service, the National Peace Council, civil society organizations, and the media to defend democratic principles and prevent political tensions from escalating.
\nAmong the key demands outlined in the statement were:
\nThe immediate release or fair trial of detained activists,
\nAn end to the criminalization of political dissent,
\nGreater government focus on economic challenges instead of political disputes.
\nAgyarko also called on President John Mahama and other state actors to safeguard democratic freedoms and ensure peace and stability in the country.
\nThe statement concluded with a call for vigilance in defending Ghana\u2019s democracy, describing the country as \u201ca beacon of hope for democracy in Africa.\u201d
\nThe development comes amid heightened political tensions and ongoing debate over free speech, governance, and political accountability in Ghana.
