The European Union is planning to fine Alphabet\u2019s Google a high triple-digit-million-euro amount as part of an antitrust investigation, Germany\u2019s Handelsblatt newspaper reported on Monday, citing commission sources.<\/p>\n

The decision is nearing completion and is expected to be announced before the summer break, the paper said, adding that it would be the largest penalty the EU has imposed for a breach of its Digital Markets Act (DMA), which aims to curb the power of big tech companies.<\/p>\n

The investigation, which was\u00a0officially launched\u00a0in \u200bMarch 2025, relates to concerns that Google favours its own services in search results and seeks to ensure the world\u2019s most popular internet search \u200bengine complies with local regulations.<\/p>\n

The Commission is more interested in securing compliance \u200brather than imposing penalties, spokesperson Thomas Regnier said in an emailed statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven with \u200cour \u2060negotiations on future solutions, we will not hesitate to move to the next steps as soon as possible,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Google has criticised the impact of the EU\u2019s rules on its search product and said it is keen to resolve the case.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe changes we\u2019ve already made to Search under the DMA represent the \u200bbiggest downgrade in the product\u2019s history, creating a \u200bsecond-rate experience \u2060for Europeans to the benefit of a few self-interested complainants,\u201d a company spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, the European Commission\u00a0said\u00a0it had given Google a little more time to address concerns after the company\u2019s previous proposal fell short.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
