For decades, the global order was built on the free exchange of ideas and the free flow of capital and goods across borders. Today, that once-interconnected world is increasingly under strain.

The world is poles apart, driven partly by shifting geopolitical dynamics, global supply chain disruptions, fierce technological competition and a growing turn toward inward-looking national policies. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the U.S.-Israeli strikes against Iran and heightened tensions in the South China Sea — where traditional maritime security concerns are increasingly intertwined with emerging technological and cyberthreats — all these signal a new era of fragmentation and composite warfare.

International institutions like the United Nations, once considered the bedrock of global cooperation and conflict resolution, now find themselves hamstrung as countries build walls and close borders in increasingly insular strategies. At the same time, the intensifying U.S.-China rivalry and growing geopolitical tensions have contributed to global fragmentation into two competing blocs: democratic nations led by the U.S. and autocrats like China, Russia and North Korea. In response, regionalism has gained renewed importance as countries seek more flexible and effective frameworks for cooperation and collective action.

Facing a structural turning point, the world should seek a new approach to partnership and governance. This requires both a sober assessment of institutional limits and concrete efforts to foster inclusive and practical collaboration. Only through such innovation can the global community restore trust and renew multilateral cooperation in a fragmented world.

How do we move forward in this grim reality? The answer lies in bringing together collective wisdom to develop practical and actionable solutions.

For more than two decades since 2001, the Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity has served as a platform for dialogue on the pressing security challenges facing the world. Building on the achievements of previous forums, this year’s key objective is to underscore the importance of both global governance and local leadership in ensuring that collaborative progress remains ethical, inclusive and resilient while examining how artificial intelligence and the energy transition are reshaping economies and societies.

Under the overarching theme of “Reinventing Cooperation in a Fragmented World,” this year’s forum will bring together the world’s best minds to explore new pathways toward peaceful coexistence and shared prosperity. The forum will feature two plenary sessions, 70 specialized panel discussions and diverse networking events, alongside youth programs designed to empower the next generation of global leaders.

One of this year’s highlights will be a special session, “A Dialogue with U.N. Secretary-General Candidates.” All five candidates — former President of Chile Michelle Bachelet, former President of the 73rd U.N. General Assembly Maria Fernanda Espinosa, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Mariano Grossi, Secretary-General of the U.N. Conference on Trade and Development (on leave) Rebeca Grynspan and former President of Senegal Macky Sall are expected to participate. With the current U.N. Secretary-General’s term set to conclude at the end of the year, the selection process for the next leader to lead the United Nations is officially underway. The session will bring together the declared candidates, who will present their visions and priorities for the future of the U.N. and multilateral cooperation.

Providing a rare opportunity for direct engagement with the candidates, the public and global civil society, the session is expected to help attendees familiarize themselves with the U.N. secretary-general hopefuls. It will also offer valuable insights into the challenges facing the international community and each candidate’s vision to turn them into opportunities.

There is a lot to discover. A series of specialized sessions featuring international organizations will convene current and former senior officials from the U.N., World Health Organization, International Energy Agency, OECD, UN Tourism and UNESCO. They will examine the evolving role of multilateral institutions and explore ways to strengthen global governance in an increasingly complex and fragmented world.

The Jeju Forum is rooted deeply in the unique history and identity of Jeju Island. The islanders have overcome a traumatic past, but the wounds from the Jeju uprising, triggered by an armed rebellion by the Jeju Committee of the Workers’ Party of South Korea in 1948 and their conflict with the military and police forces, are still fresh. Their armed conflict costed the lives of tens of thousands of residents. It is one of the darkest chapters of Korea’s modern history.

To commemorate this legacy, the Korean government designated Jeju as the “Island of World Peace” in 2005. Now, taking peace building as historical mandate, the Jeju Forum organizers remain committed to positioning itself as a world-class international platform for dialogue and cooperation.

This year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will join as a co-host of the forum, the first of its kind. The ministry’s active engagement is expected to help the forum reach more visibility than before.

More than 5,000 participants from home and abroad are expected to join the forum. Former heads of government, including former Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon, former President of the Republic of Indonesia Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, former Prime Minister of Japan Yukio Hatoyama and former Prime Minister of Mongolia Gombojav Zandanshatar, heads of international organizations, high-level policymakers, leading academics and experts are expected to participate

Building a more peaceful and prosperous world is a shared responsibility, and every individual has an important role to play in this endeavor. We cordially invite you to join us in this landmark peace event on the scenic island of Jeju.

<span style="color: rgb(153, 153,
