Further checks with Departments of Agriculture confirmed that most Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) had also not received the inputs needed for onward distribution to farmers in their areas. The situation means the gap exists not only at the farm level but at the institutional level responsible for getting inputs there.

The organisation said the delay risks disrupting planting schedules and could undermine the government’s broader agricultural transformation agenda at the very moment it matters most. With rains already beginning in several parts of the country, SEND Ghana said the window for timely planting is narrowing and called on government to expedite distribution as a matter of urgency.

The warning is compounded by a farmer confidence problem rooted in last season’s difficulties. SEND Ghana said a number of farmers are already reluctant to expand cultivation this year following significant losses they suffered in 2025, when overproduction drove farmgate prices down and many were left unable to sell their maize and rice at viable prices. Failure to deliver inputs on time, the organisation said, risks deepening that reluctance and reducing overall farmer participation in the 2026 season.

SEND Ghana also used the statement to press for a deliberate inclusion agenda within the programme, calling on the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to prioritise young people and women in how the Feed Ghana Programme is implemented. It argued that channelling programme resources toward youth and women farmers would serve a dual purpose: strengthening food production while creating jobs in an economy where youth unemployment remains a structural challenge.

The organisation further called for improved transparency in how the programme is run, asking government to provide regular public updates on implementation progress and on how farmers can access support. SEND Ghana said transparent communication would help farmers navigate the programme while also enabling civil society organisations to track delivery and offer independent feedback on what is working and what is not.

“Without these, the government risks missing set targets and wasting public resources,” SEND Ghana said.

The organisation affirmed the programme’s potential, describing it as capable of enhancing food security, reducing food inflation, creating employment and promoting agro-industrial development. It stressed, however, that results would depend entirely on strong agricultural governance at the local level and the timely and equitable delivery of programme interventions.

NewsGhana,
