Gareth Southgate has said that he believes\u00a0Luke Shaw\u00a0has \u201ca good chance\u201d of making\u00a0England\u2019s final Euro 2024 squad despite the defender having not played competitive football since February.<\/p>\n

Shaw\u2019s last appearance for club or country came on Feb. 18 when he limped off with a muscular problem early in the second half of\u00a0Manchester United\u2019s 2-1 win at Luton Town.<\/p>\n

Southgate admitted at last month\u2019s provisional squad announcement that the 28-year-old was \u201cup against it\u201d in his bid to make the plane to Germany, with the England boss having until Friday night to narrow down an initial 33-man selection to a maximum of 26.<\/p>\n

But Shaw reported early for England duty following the end of the domestic season as he battles to prove himself and Southgate offered an encouraging update when speaking to reporters on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s progressing very well, I have to say,\u201d Southgate told TalkSport. \u201cI think I said last week that until we had the players in front of us working with us, there was a lot of information that we didn\u2019t have.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re pleased with how he\u2019s progressing. There\u2019s still a bit to do before he can get on the pitch in a game situation.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut really pleased with the work he\u2019s doing with our physical performance team and our medics, so, yeah, he\u2019s in with a good chance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shaw has amassed 31 international caps and scored the opening goal in England\u2019s Euro 2020 final defeat to\u00a0Italy. Left-back is a problem position for England with\u00a0Kieran Trippier, typically used at right-back, the most likely candidate to start at Euro 2024 if Shaw is unavailable.<\/p>\n

Southgate confirmed that Shaw,\u00a0Harry Maguire,\u00a0Anthony Gordon,\u00a0Bukayo Saka\u00a0and\u00a0John Stones\u00a0will all miss Monday\u2019s first warm-up game against Bosnia and Herzegovina at Newcastle\u2019s St James\u2019 Park as England\u2019s preparations are hampered by a variety of fitness issues.<\/p>\n

Jude Bellingham\u00a0will also be absent against Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as for Friday\u2019s friendly against Iceland at Wembley after the midfielder was given a week off following\u00a0Real Madrid\u2019s Champions League final win over\u00a0Borussia Dortmund.<\/p>
