President John Dramani Mahama has called on African leaders and citizens to strengthen their commitment to human rights, describing the moment as critical for the continent\u2019s judicial and moral progress.<\/p>\n

He made the remarks on Monday, 2 March 2026, at the opening of the 2026 judicial year of the African Court on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights in Arusha, Tanzania.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on the Court\u2019s 20-year history, President Mahama praised its role in protecting the rights and dignity of African people beyond national borders.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the past 20 years, we have had a court that can protect the rights and dignity of African people beyond the borders of our individual nations,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

Speaking in the historic city of Arusha, which he described as a symbol of human rights affirmation, the President emphasised the urgency of action:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe time is now. Now is the time for us to meet the challenge of keeping the promises we have made to future generations\u2014promises we have signed and pledged to uphold,\u201d he declared.<\/p>\n

President Mahama further called for a deepened commitment to the Court, noting that such dedication would ensure its continued prominence:<\/p>\n

\u201cNow is the time to deepen our commitment to the Court, so that in 20 years, when we celebrate its 40th anniversary, it will stand as the leading international judicial body and a model for others,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He also urged the continent to embrace its potential and rise to its aspirations:<\/p>\n

\u201cNow is the time for Africa to step into its greatness,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
