Xbox fans have been left divided after Microsoft announced Phil Spencer, boss of its gaming division, and Xbox president Sarah Bond would step down from their roles.<\/p>\n

Spencer, who is retiring after nearly 40 years at Microsoft, will be replaced by Asha Sharma \u2013 an executive who previously oversaw some of the firm\u2019s AI initiatives.<\/p>\n

But the executive shake-up has sparked online debate and speculation about Sharma\u2019s lack of gaming background, with some\u00a0calling it\u00a0\u201cthe end of Xbox\u201d.<\/p>\n

It follows a challenging year that has seen\u00a0major layoffs,\u00a0poor sales\u00a0and\u00a0increasing development costs\u00a0for the gaming giant.<\/p>\n

Xbox also revealed on Friday that Matt Booty, who previously worked under Spencer as corporate vice president of Xbox Game Studios, had been promoted to chief content officer.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0a statement on Microsoft\u2019s website,\u00a0Booty appeared to try to ease concerns that the reshuffle could mean a wider shake-up across Xbox, saying \u201cthere are no organisational changes underway for our studios\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

But fans have continued to criticise Sharma\u2019s appointment as Spencer\u2019s successor, citing her lack of gaming and industry experience.<\/p>\n

Some\u00a0mocked the executive\u2019s attempt\u00a0to prove her credentials by publicly sharing her Xbox Gamertag, showing how many games she has recently played \u2013 29, but all seemingly in the past month.<\/p>\n

Jez Corden from Microsoft news outlet Windows Central said Sharma\u2019s \u201cexpertise in other fields\u201d and background at firms such as Facebook owner Meta may have helped her secure the top job at Xbox over other executives, such as Bond.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe gaming landscape is struggling to find its footing faced with competition from instant-gratification platforms like Instagram and TikTok,\u201d he told the BBC.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is where Microsoft has identified weakness in its platform, and opted for Asha\u2019s expertise to fill the gap.\u201d<\/p>\n

Victoria Phillips Kennedy, news reporter for gaming publication Eurogamer, questioned whether Sharma\u2019s background would mean \u201cwe see Xbox be more aggressive in its adoption of AI in the development pipeline\u201d.<\/p>\n

Sharma has meanwhile said she will not look to \u201cflood our ecosystem with soulless AI slop\u201d in her new role.<\/p>\n

\u201cGames are and always will be art, crafted by humans, and created with the most innovative technology provided by us,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Phil Spencer\u2019s Xbox legacy<\/h2>\n

Phil Spencer joined Microsoft as an intern in 1988, working his way up through the company to eventually become chief executive of Microsoft Gaming in 2022.<\/p>\n

Under his leadership, he oversaw major acquisitions, including Minecraft creator Mojang and\u00a0the biggest deal in gaming history\u00a0with Call of Duty maker Activision Blizzard.<\/p>\n

Spencer also launched Xbox Game Pass in 2017, a subscription service that allows players to download and play games on their PC and other devices, not just an Xbox.<\/p>\n

Freelance gaming journalist for IGN and Eurogamer, Vikki Blake, said it would be \u201chard to imagine Xbox without Phil Spencer\u201d.<\/p>\n

But she told the BBC his departure was not \u201ccompletely shocking\u201d given the brand\u2019s recent struggle to remain relevant in a crowded console market and its decision to \u201cmove away from platform exclusives\u201d with titles such as Halo.<\/p>\n

In posts on X, Spencer said he felt \u201clucky\u201d to have worked with \u201cso many passionate creators, partners, colleagues and players across the industry\u201d.<\/p>\n
