More research on the threats of artificial intelligence (AI) \u201cneeds to be done urgently\u201d, the boss of Google DeepMind has told BBC News.<\/p>\n

In an exclusive interview at the AI Impact Summit in Delhi, Sir Demis Hassabis said the industry wanted \u201csmart regulation\u201d for \u201cthe real risks\u201d posed by the tech.<\/p>\n

Many tech leaders and politicians at the Summit have called for more global governance of AI, ahead of an expected joint statement as the event draws to a close.<\/p>\n

But the US has rejected this stance, with White House technology adviser Michael Kratsios saying: \u201cAI adoption cannot lead to a brighter future if it is subject to bureaucracies and centralised control.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sir Demis said it was important to build \u201crobust guardrails\u201d against the most serious threats from the rise of autonomous systems.<\/p>\n

He said the two main threats were the technology being used by \u201cbad actors\u201d, and the risk of losing control of systems as they become more powerful.<\/p>\n

When asked whether he had the power to slow down the progress of the tech to give experts more time to work on its challenges, he said his firm had an important role to play, but was \u201conly one player in the ecosystem\u201d.<\/p>\n

But he admitted keeping up with the pace of AI development was \u201cthe hard thing\u201d for regulators.<\/p>\n

Sam Altman, the boss of OpenAI, also called for \u201curgent regulation\u201d in a speech at the AI Summit, while Indian Prime Minster Narendra Modi said countries had to work together to benefit from AI.<\/p>\n

However, the US has taken the opposite view. \u201cAs the Trump administration has now said many times: We totally reject global governance of AI,\u201d said the head of the US delegation Michael Kratsios.<\/p>\n

Delegates from more than 100 countries, including several world leaders, are attending the event. Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy MP represented the UK government.<\/p>\n

Mr Lammy said the power wasn\u2019t just with tech firms when it came to safety of AI and politicians need to work \u201chand in hand\u201d with tech adding, \u201csecurity and safety must come first and it must be of benefit for the wider public\u201d.<\/p>\n

Sir Demis believes the US and the west are \u201cslightly\u201d ahead in the race with China for AI dominance but added that it could be \u201conly a matter of months\u201d before China catches up.<\/p>\n

He said he felt the responsibility to balance being \u201cbold and responsible\u201d about deploying AI systems out in the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t always get things right,\u201d he admitted, \u201cbut we get it more correct than most\u201d.<\/p>\n

Science education \u2018still very important\u2019<\/h2>\n

In the next 10 years the tech would become \u201ca superpower\u201d in terms of what people would be able to create, Sir Demis, who won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s still very important to have a Stem (science, technology, engineering and maths) education,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you have a technical background, I think it will still be an advantage in using these systems.\u201d<\/p>\n

He thinks AI writing code would open up the number of people who could build new applications, \u201cand then maybe the key thing becomes taste and creativity and judgement\u201d.<\/p>\n

The AI Impact Summit is the largest ever global gathering of world leaders and tech bosses.<\/p>\n

It ends on Friday with companies and countries expected to deliver a shared view of how to handle artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
