Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi has been handed additional prison sentences totalling seven and a half years by an Iranian court, her lawyer has said.<\/p>\n

The human rights activist was sentenced to six years for \u201cgathering and collusion\u201d, and one-and-a-half years for \u201cpropaganda activities\u201d by a court in the north-eastern city of Mashhad, Mostafa Nili announced on social media on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Mohammadi was arrested in December for making \u201cprovocative remarks\u201d at a memorial ceremony, Iranian authorities said at the time. Her family said she was\u00a0taken to the hospital after being beaten during the arrest.<\/p>\n

The 53-year-old was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2023 for her activism against the oppression of women in Iran.<\/p>\n

Nili, who spoke to Mohammadi for the first time since 14 December, said she had also been handed a two-year ban on leaving the country and two years of exile to the eastern Khusf region.<\/p>\n

The Narges Foundation, which supports her, described the hearing on Saturday as a \u201csham\u201d and said she began a hunger strike on 2 February.<\/p>\n

Nili said she had been taken to hospital three days ago \u201cdue to her poor physical condition\u201d before being returned to the detention centre she is being held in.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen she began to explain the events and how she was detained, the phone was disconnected.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mohammadi\u2019s husband, Taghi Rahmani, said she offered no defence in court because of her \u201csteadfast\u201d belief that \u201cthis judiciary holds no legitimacy\u201d and that the proceedings were \u201ca mere charade with a pre-determined end\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThough she was likely forced to attend, she remained silent \u2013 she did not utter a single word, nor did she sign a single paper.\u201d<\/p>\n

He described the sentence to the BBC as \u201ccruel and very unfair\u201d, and called on human rights organisations to protest against the ruling.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Kiana Rahmani, Mohammadi\u2019s daughter, said she was \u201cgravely concerned\u201d for her mother.<\/p>\n

Mohammadi has already spent more than 10 years of her life in prison. The Narges Foundation says the latest sentence brings the total time she has been ordered to spend in prison to 44 years.<\/p>\n

Since 2021, she has been serving a 13-year sentence for \u201cpropaganda activity against the state\u201d and \u201ccollusion against state security\u201d, charges she denies.<\/p>\n

The activist was given temporary release from Tehran\u2019s notorious Evin prison for three weeks in December 2024 on medical grounds.<\/p>\n

She was expected to return to prison soon after, where she was serving multiple sentences.<\/p>\n

The most recent arrest came as she attended a memorial for Khosrow Alikordi, a lawyer who had been found dead in his office in early December.<\/p>\n

Norway-based group Iran Human Rights has called for an independent inquiry to establish how he died, saying the circumstances surrounding his death were \u201csuspicious\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Narges Foundation previously said eyewitnesses had seen Mohammadi being attacked by around 15 plainclothes agents of the regime while at the memorial event, and that some were seen pulling her hair and beating her with clubs and batons.<\/p>\n

Mashhad prosecutor Hasan Hematifar told reporters that Mohammadi had been among 39 people arrested, and she and Alikordi\u2019s brother had encouraged those present \u201cto chant norm-breaking slogans\u201d and \u201cdisturb the peace\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mohammadi was among the signatories of a petition that expressed criticism of the Iranian authorities and held Iran\u2019s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei responsible for what it called \u201ccrimes against humanity\u201d over the killing of protesters during unrest that began in late December.<\/p>\n

The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency says it has counted more than 50,000 arrests related to the demonstrations and had confirmed at least 6,961 deaths.<\/p>\n

The petition called for the prosecution of those acting on Khamenei\u2019s orders and an end to the Islamic Republic.<\/p>\n

Four prominent Iranian activists \u2013 identified as Abdollah Momeni, Mehdi Mahmoudian, Vida Rabbani and Ghorban Behzadian-Nejad \u2013 have also been arrested since 31 January for their contribution to the petition.<\/p>\n

Taghi Rahmani urged the release of \u201call political prisoners in Iran\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
