The boss of ChatGPT-maker OpenAI is being ridiculed for launching a lengthy attack on a rival chatbot firm over the adverts it intends to run during the Super Bowl.<\/p>\n

Anthropic is using\u00a0the ads\u00a0to criticise the introduction of commercials<\/span> to ChatGPT, describing the move as a \u201cbetrayal\u201d.<\/p>\n

In a 420-word-long post on X, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman hit back, calling Anthropic \u201cdishonest\u201d and \u201cdeceptive\u201d \u2013 and even accusing the firm of using \u201cdoublespeak\u201d.<\/p>\n

But commenters on social media have turned the accusation back on Altman, with\u00a0some likening his post to\u00a0\u201cthe digital equivalent of a toddler throwing a tantrum\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cLooks like a nerve was well and truly hit,\u201d\u00a0said one person, while another\u00a0called his post\u00a0\u201chypocritical\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reason Anthropic\u2019s satirical ads went viral is precisely that public trust in you and OpenAI has already hit rock bottom over the past few months,\u201d\u00a0reads one prominent comment.<\/p>\n

Altman also took issue with Anthropic\u2019s decision to run the videos during the Super Bowl on 8 February.<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess it\u2019s on brand for Anthropic doublespeak to use a deceptive ad to critique theoretical deceptive ads that aren\u2019t real, but a Super Bowl ad is not where I would expect it,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

He justified the introduction of adverts by saying OpenAI was committed to \u201cfree access\u201d and \u201cagency\u201d for ChatGPT users.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnthropic serves an expensive product to rich people,\u201d he said, and argued his company sought to \u201cbring AI to billions of people who can\u2019t pay for subscriptions\u201d.<\/p>\n

But Nikita Bier, the head of product at X, offered Altman some simple advice for the future.<\/p>\n

\u201cNever respond to playful humour with an essay,\u201d\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n

Super Bowl spat<\/h2>\n

Anthropic offers a free version of Claude, but more users\u00a0have to pay\u00a0for more capable versions \u2013 as they\u00a0do with ChatGPT.<\/p>\n

The BBC has approached Anthropic for comment.<\/p>\n

The firm\u2019s adverts depict a range of scenarios intended to make fun of how carrying adverts could negatively impact the way people use chatbots.<\/p>\n

One features a man talking to a therapist about how to communicate better with his mum \u2013 the kind of query a user might put to ChatGPT.<\/p>\n

The therapist initially responds with some common-sense suggestions for the user, before jarringly veering into what appears to be a dating service for older women.<\/p>\n

It then ends with the slogan: \u201cAds are coming to AI. But not to Claude.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the humorous tone, the fact that Anthropic is screening the ads during the Super Bowl \u2013 the most expensive and high-profile marketing opportunity in the US \u2013 shows it does not really see its rivalry with OpenAI as a laughing matter.<\/p>\n

Experts say\u00a0a 30-second commercial during what is one of the world\u2019s most-watched sporting events could cost up to $10m (\u00a37.4m).<\/p>\n

Though this is dwarfed by the many hundreds of billions AI companies are ploughing into the tech.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
