Senior Adviser to the Bawumia Campaign Team and Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, has said former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is committed to working with all shades of opinion within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following his victory in the party\u2019s presidential primaries held on January 31, 2026.<\/p>\n

Dr Bawumia secured the NPP\u2019s flagbearer position after polling 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 per cent of the total valid votes cast.<\/p>\n

His closest challenger, Kennedy Agyapong, placed second with 46,554 votes, accounting for 23.76 per cent of the vote.<\/p>\n

Dr Bryan Acheampong followed in third position with 36,303 votes, equivalent to 18.53 per cent. Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum came fourth with 1,999 votes, representing 1.02 per cent, while former party General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong placed fifth with 402 votes, or 0.21 per cent.<\/p>\n

Mr Awuku said the margin of victory places Dr Bawumia in a strong position to rally the party ahead of the 2028 general elections, noting that unity would be central to the next phase of the party\u2019s rebuilding efforts.<\/p>\n

He, however, cautioned that the real test for the NPP would lie beyond the leading aspirants themselves, pointing instead to the attitudes and conduct of their wider support bases.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe challenge will not necessarily come from the big men who contested; it will rather be the people around them who were voted out\u2014their commentary, conduct, and our ability to get everyone to appreciate the bigger picture of winning power in 2028,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Citi FM on Monday, February 2, 2026, Mr Awuku said the campaign had always been confident of victory based on its internal projections, although there were moments when a run-off appeared possible.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the beginning, our internal figures suggested we would win, but at some point people thought it could go into a run-off, which we wanted to avoid,\u201d he said, explaining that a clear win was important for party cohesion.<\/p>\n

According to him, avoiding a second round has given Dr Bawumia the moral authority to lead and reconcile the party without controversy or division.<\/p>\n

Dr Bawumia is expected to commence broad consultations with party stakeholders in the coming weeks as the NPP begins preparations towards the 2028 general elections.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
