The Minority Caucus in Parliament has congratulated Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on his election as the New Patriotic Party\u2019s (NPP) flagbearer, describing his victory as a clear and nationwide mandate to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.<\/p>\n

In a statement signed by Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Caucus said Dr. Bawumia\u2019s decisive win in the NPP presidential primary held on January 31, 2026, reflects \u201cthe overwhelming confidence delegates across all 276 constituencies, both at home and in the diaspora, have placed in his leadership and vision for Ghana.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking on behalf of the 87 Members of Parliament who make up the Minority in Ghana\u2019s Ninth Parliament, Mr. Afenyo-Markin praised Dr. Bawumia\u2019s campaign, describing it as one marked by vision, intellectual rigour, and a resolute commitment to national development.<\/p>\n

The Minority Caucus also commended the other aspirants\u2014 Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, for their participation in what it described as a robust and credible democratic process that underscores the NPP\u2019s enduring commitment to internal democracy.<\/p>\n

While acknowledging that the primary contest was intense and, at times, marked by friction, the Caucus said the conclusion of the elections signals the start of a critical phase of reconciliation and unity within the party. It urged all party members, supporters, delegates, and grassroots structures to rally behind Dr. Bawumia\u2019s leadership in the national interest.<\/p>\n

\u201cNational interest demands that we transform yesterday\u2019s divisions into tomorrow\u2019s collective strength.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reflecting on the NPP\u2019s defeat in the 2024 general elections, the Minority Caucus said the experience reinforced an important lesson\u2014that unity remains the party\u2019s strongest asset. It warned that internal divisions often lead to electoral setbacks that ultimately undermine Ghana\u2019s development.<\/p>\n

The statement further pledged the Minority Caucus\u2019 full support for Dr. Bawumia, noting that the collective experience of current and former NPP Members of Parliament\u2014who secured 169 parliamentary seats in 2016 and 137 in 2020, and implemented key policies such as the Free Senior High School programme, major infrastructure projects, and digital economy reforms\u2014positions the party strongly for the 2028 elections.<\/p>\n

Turning attention to governance, the Minority Caucus said it would intensify scrutiny of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), promising to hold the government accountable on issues affecting ordinary Ghanaians. These include concerns over the depletion of gold reserves, alleged losses from questionable gold trading transactions, challenges in public transportation, deteriorating international relations, the fight against illegal mining, and rising youth unemployment.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo the people of Ghana, we declare that the NPP stands united, renewed, and prepared to offer accountable governance, economic revival, and inclusive prosperity,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n

The Minority Caucus expressed confidence that under Dr. Bawumia\u2019s leadership, the NPP is better positioned to restore hope, strengthen democratic governance, and lead Ghana towards sustained economic growth beyond 2028.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
