After Ye\u00a0pulled out a full-page newspaper ad to apologise for his previous antisemitic comments, the rapper is doubling down and attempting to assure the public that it\u2019s not a PR stunt.<\/p>\n

Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, said in a series of emailed statements\u00a0to Vanity Fair, published Tuesday, Jan. 27, that his apology letter to the Black and Jewish communities was not a part of a strategy ahead of his new studio album, \u201cBully.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, the rapper insisted that \u201cthese remorseful feelings were so heavy on my heart and weighing on my spirit\u201d and that he owed \u201ca huge apology once again for everything that I said that hurt the Jewish and Black communities in particular.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI look at the wreckage of my episode and realise that this isn\u2019t who I am,\u201d Ye told Vanity Fair.<\/p>\n

In the apology letter featured in a Wall Street Journal advertisement Monday, Jan. 26, Ye said his mental health history \u2013 including a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and a four-month manic episode that took place in the first half of 2025 \u2013 was what allegedly fueled his \u201creckless\u201d behaviour.<\/p>\n

Ye talks manic episodes, medications in Vanity Fair interview<\/h2>\n

Ye gave context about his state of mind in the Vanity Fair interview, saying he\u2019s \u201cbeen put on and taken off of many medications\u201d over time. \u201cToward the end of my four-month-long manic episode, my medication was changed. In that shift, the antipsychotic drug took me into a really deep depressive episode.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said his wife, Bianca Censori,\u00a0\u201crecognised\u201d the issues and helped him find an \u201ceffective and stabilising course correction in my regime from a rehab facility in Switzerland.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re manic, you really don\u2019t think that you\u2019re sick,\u201d Ye told Vanity Fair. \u201cYou think that everyone else is deeply overreacting. You feel like you\u2019re seeing the world so much more clearly on things, when in reality you\u2019re losing your grip entirely.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, experts are weighing in on Ye\u2019s apology and whether his mental state is enough to win him back in the public\u2019s good graces.<\/p>\n

Ye apology letter comes after social media tirades; ADL speaks out<\/strong><\/p>\n

In recent years, Ye has lauded Adolf Hitler with the release of a song titled \u201cHeil Hitler,\u201d sold clothing emblazoned with the swastika symbol through his clothing company Yeezy and used pro-Nazi language in his social media posts and tirades.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am not a Nazi or an antisemite,\u201d he wrote in the Wall Street Journal full-page ad. \u201cI love Jewish people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ye wrote in the ad that in his \u201cmania, I lost complete sight of\u201d his \u201cglobal impact and influence,\u201d adding that he is \u201cdeeply mortified by my actions\u201d and is \u201ccommitted to accountability, treatment and meaningful change.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, in his interview with Vanity Fair, he seemingly refused to acknowledge where his antisemitic views originated from.<\/p>\n

The rapper said he is committed and dedicated to repairing relationships frayed by his alleged manic episodes. \u201cAll of the family bonds, deep relationships, and lifelong friendships that I worked so hard to build over so many years were all tarnished by all of the horrible statements that I made so impulsively,\u201d he told Vanity Fair.<\/p>\n

That sentiment was echoed by a spokesperson for the Anti-Defamation League, who said in a statement to USA TODAY on Monday, Jan. 26, that it was not an automatic tabula rasa.<\/p>\n

The organisation said Ye\u2019s apology to the Jewish community \u201cwas long overdue\u201d but doesn\u2019t \u201cautomatically undo his long history of antisemitism \u2013 the antisemitic \u2018Heil Hitler\u2019 song he created, the hundreds of tweets, the swastikas and myriad Holocaust references \u2013 and all of the feelings of hurt and betrayal it caused,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe truest apology would be for him to not engage in antisemitic behaviour in the future,\u201d the organisation concluded. \u201cWe wish him well on the road to recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n

Is Ye apology \u2018lip service\u2019? Expert weighs in<\/h2>\n

Ye also revealed in the WSJ ad that in 2023, he was diagnosed with an injury to his right frontal lobe after sustaining injuries from his 2002 car accident, which inspired the breakthrough single \u201cThrough the Wire.\u201d<\/p>\n

Andrea Bonior,\u00a0a licensed clinical psychologist and professor at Georgetown University, says that either the brain injury or Ye\u2019s BPD diagnosis could have led to delusional thinking, but conflating the two may not be the right way to look at the situation.<\/p>\n

Bonior tells USA TODAY, \u201cthere\u2019s no real evidence\u201d that a traumatic brain injury \u201cdirectly causes bipolar disorder.\u201d Medical technicalities aside, Bonior says Ye\u2019s open letter is a start in repairing the damage caused by his comments, widely viewed as antisemitic.<\/p>\n

But they won\u2019t hold much weight until he has time to prove himself, Bonior says. \u201cThis apology itself could be seen as part of a pattern that\u2019s going to go right back to where it was before. He\u2019s certainly apologised before,\u201d Bonior said. \u201cIt\u2019s really hard, especially for people in the Jewish community, to know whether this is lip service.\u201d<\/p>\n

Only time will tell. \u201cThe best apology is changed behaviour,\u201d Bonior says. \u201cIs he really getting the treatment that he might need? Does he have the support of people who have his best interest in mind and will help him actually make amends, actually atone for the hurt that he\u2019s caused?\u201d<\/p>\n

In the meantime, Bonoir warns of \u201ccreating a dialogue where any and all racism or antisemitism can potentially be excused away by mental health.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really important we recognise that mental health problems and racism or antisemitism \u2026 are unique problems that may overlap a bit, but they each require, I think, different solutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
