The Minister of\u00a0Roads and Highways, Governs\u00a0Kwame\u00a0Agbodza, has reaffirmed President John\u00a0Mahama\u2019s\u00a0commitment to infrastructure development, describing the road sector as a central pillar of the government\u2019s national development agenda.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr\u00a0Agbodza\u00a0made the remarks on Friday during a courtesy visit to the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, where he outlined the government\u2019s priorities and progress in reviving stalled road projects across the country since the President\u2019s return to office.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He\u00a0disclosed\u00a0that President\u00a0Mahama\u00a0inherited a road sector portfolio valued at more than GH\u00a2110\u00a0billion but\u00a0said\u00a0nearly 99\u00a0per cent of contractors were off-site at the time due to\u00a0non-payment of certified works.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe problem was not a lack of projects, but a lack of payment. Contractors had raised certificates, but without payment, they could not continue work,\u201d he explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Minister said the President directed that no inherited road project should be\u00a0terminated, irrespective of which administration awarded the contract.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThese projects are for national development, not political ownership. Contractors were asked to return to site and complete their\u00a0work,\u201d he\u00a0stated.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr\u00a0Agbodza\u00a0revealed that as of December 31, 2025, the government, through the Ministry of Finance, had paid close to GH\u00a27 billion to road contractors, most of whom had been awarded their contracts under\u00a0previous\u00a0administrations.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis reflects leadership that is nationalistic and development-oriented,\u00a0rather than partisan,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Minister explained that the President\u2019s road development\u00a0programme\u00a0is anchored on rehabilitating major trunk roads while strengthening feeder roads to improve access to rural and\u00a0peri-urban communities.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He outlined three key national corridors: The Western Corridor, stretching from Takoradi through Sawla to Wa; the Eastern Corridor, running from\u00a0Tema\u00a0through\u00a0Hohoe,\u00a0Jasikan\u00a0and\u00a0Kpasa\u00a0to\u00a0Damongo; and\u00a0the Central Corridor, linking\u00a0Accra through Kumasi to Tamale.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr\u00a0Agbodza\u00a0noted that several sections of these routes had been awarded in the past but stalled due to funding challenges.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said these have now been integrated into the government\u2019s flagship \u201cBig Push\u201d Phase One Priority Projects.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He\u00a0identified\u00a0the Accra\u2013Adomi\u00a0Bridge\u2013Ho\u2013Dzodze\u2013Aflao\u00a0Road as a major priority, describing it as critical to regional trade, tourism, and cross-border integration.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWork is ongoing, particularly on the Ho-\u00a0Aflao\u00a0section, where some contractors are making steady progress. All Big Push projects are expected to be completed within a two-year\u00a0timeframe, by the end of 2027,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Minister called on traditional leaders and residents to actively monitor\u00a0projects in their communities.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cDo not allow contractors to take projects and abandon them. You have the right to demand updates and hold them accountable,\u201d he urged.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr\u00a0Agbodza\u00a0listed several ongoing and upcoming projects, including the Accra\u2013Ashaiman\u2013Atimpoku\u00a0Corridor, where delays had been caused by the failure to\u00a0relocate\u00a0utility services before contract awards.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said coordination with the Electricity Company of Ghana and Ghana Water Company is underway to resolve the challenge.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He also mentioned the Motorway Extension to Central University, which had stalled due to debt restructuring but is now nearing renegotiation for continuation, and the\u00a0Volivo\u00a0Bridge Project, which he described as set to become the largest and one of the most\u00a0iconic bridges in the country.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said discussions with the Japanese Government had reached an advanced stage, with sod-cutting expected before the end of the year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Additional\u00a0works, he said, are ongoing or scheduled to begin on the Sege\u2013Mefe\u00a0Road, roads and some roads within the Ho Municipality,\u00a0Anloga, Ketu North,\u00a0Hohoe,\u00a0Amedzofe.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sokode\u2013Juapong,\u00a0Abutia\u00a0Teti\u2013Dzakpo,\u00a0Vakpo\u2013Wusuta, Abor\u2013Atsiavi, and several town and\u00a0feeder roads across the region.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Minister cautioned against frequent variations to awarded projects, warning that such changes often increase costs and delay completion.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cLet us complete phase one first. If expansions or dual carriageways are needed, they can be done in the future. The priority now is to make our roads safe and\u00a0motorable,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Volta Regional House of Chiefs commended President\u00a0Mahama\u00a0for his efforts in the road sector and other areas, noting that the government was fulfilling key campaign promises and strengthening engagement with traditional authorities.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr\u00a0Agbodza\u00a0assured the chiefs of the Ministry\u2019s continued openness to dialogue and collaboration to ensure that communities across the region benefit from improved road infrastructure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
